Chapter 9 - The House Beyond the Gate
Malcolm Sterling’s estate sat behind iron gates and a winding driveway lined with trees he had imported from Europe. From the street, the house looked peaceful. Naomi found that insulting.
Maya’s team traced Daniel’s phone to the property, but it went dead before a judge could authorize a search based on the available evidence. They assembled witness statements and property records. Alexander contacted the family’s legal counsel to preserve every document connected to Harbor Relief.
Naomi wanted to drive through the gates herself. Rosa made her sit down.
“Courage doesn’t mean you have to walk into every trap,” Rosa said.
“You did.”
“And I spent twenty-three years wondering whether the price would catch up with us.”
That evening, an employee from Malcolm’s grounds crew approached Maya. He had seen a man matching Daniel’s description taken to a guesthouse, and a teenage boy escorted to a locked garage. Daniel’s younger brother, Luis, was seventeen.
Within hours, police obtained a warrant. Officers entered the property at dawn. They found Luis frightened but unharmed and Daniel with bruised wrists, alive. Malcolm was absent. His staff insisted he had left for business before midnight.
Daniel told Maya he had been forced to send the message at the ferry terminal. He also revealed that Evelyn had been moved in a black van after she tried to identify an old hospital supervisor named Arthur Pike.
“Pike handled the money,” Daniel said. “Sterling handled the threats.”
When Naomi finally saw Daniel at the hospital, she did not tell him everything was okay. It wasn't. She sat beside him and asked whether Luis had eaten. Daniel started crying.
Later Maya sent a photograph of a passenger manifest. Malcolm Sterling had boarded a small charter plane before the raid. One additional passenger used a false surname.

At the hospital, Luis kept checking whether the doors were locked. Daniel offered him a sandwich, and the boy couldn't swallow the first bite. Maya stayed until a counselor arrived. Naomi learned that rescue had an aftermath nobody put into the triumphant headlines.
The passenger’s date of birth matched Evelyn Shaw’s exactly.
