Chapter 19 - The Truth Has Witnesses

The allegation did not become fact simply because Malcolm made it. Investigators tested it. Phone records placed Vanessa in contact with the men who removed Evelyn from the hospital. Security footage showed one of those men entering a building she controlled. A signed transfer connected the payments to her account. Confronted with the evidence, one accomplice agreed to testify.

Vanessa was charged. She pleaded not guilty, and the case proceeded through the courts. Naomi had once fantasized about seeing her humiliated in public. Now she wanted something harder and less satisfying: a process sturdy enough to survive a wealthy defendant's lawyers.

One evening Alexander asked whether she regretted going to the party.

“I regret that she thought she could hurt me,” Naomi answered. “I don't regret catching her foot.”

Alexander smiled faintly. “You were always stubborn.”

“You've known me for a few months.”

“I've been waiting twenty-three years to argue with my sister again.”

She rolled her eyes, but let him hug her.

After a lengthy trial, a jury convicted Malcolm on multiple financial and conspiracy counts connected to the scheme. Separate proceedings addressed the abuse and corruption allegations. Vanessa was later convicted in the kidnapping conspiracy involving Evelyn and Daniel, and for associated offenses supported by the evidence. Other defendants received their own hearings and outcomes. No ruling could restore every missing record or childhood.

The Whitmore foundation placed its assets under independent oversight and established a restitution program with survivor representatives controlling the application process. Alexander stepped away from the family chairmanship while the investigation reviewed the old board’s decisions.

Naomi visited Rosa with the news. Her mother asked whether anyone had found all the children.

“Not yet,” Naomi said.

“Then there’s still work.”

When the verdicts began arriving, the clinic's staff declined an invitation to celebrate at a luxury restaurant. Instead, they ordered takeout and left the phones switched on for survivors who might be distressed by the news. Victory, Naomi realized, should leave room for grief.

At the door, a courier handed Naomi an envelope addressed to Lucia Whitmore. Inside was a drawing of a rabbit with one bent ear and a note: I THINK I REMEMBER YOU. CALL ME.
