Chapter 15 - The Second Ledger

Malcolm returned under escort and appeared at a federal courthouse surrounded by lawyers. His cooperation was conditional and self-serving, but he brought documents investigators had not seen before: bank transfers, coded memos, and the names of officials who had steered complaints away from St. Agnes.

He insisted Alexander’s father had financed the original operation. Alexander listened to a summary with his hands folded so tightly his fingertips whitened.

Naomi asked Maya whether she believed Malcolm.

“I believe documents that can be checked,” Maya said. “I believe testimony that holds up when someone tries to break it.”

The second ledger connected charitable payments to legal fees for a city official who had overseen the home’s licensing. It also showed money flowing into a private trust established for Vanessa years earlier. Malcolm claimed the trust was harmless. Bank records suggested otherwise.

Outside court, reporters shouted for Alexander to comment on his father. He stopped walking.

“My father is dead,” he said. “The people harmed by his decisions are not. Ask about them.”

Naomi was proud of him for exactly three seconds. Then a journalist asked whether Rosa had committed kidnapping by taking Lucy across state lines.

Naomi turned. “My mother carried a child out of a burning building.”

The journalist demanded proof.

“You'll have it in court,” Naomi said. “And you’ll hear the rest too.”

That evening prosecutors told Rosa that her testimony might be essential to reconstructing the aftermath of the fire. They also warned that defense attorneys could attack every choice she had made, including her use of false documents.

Rosa straightened her shoulders. “Then let them. I’m tired of hiding.”

Naomi thought that was the bravest thing she had ever heard.

Malcolm's arrival drew cameras, but no one filmed the clerks who wheeled in boxes of exhibits. Naomi watched them work and felt a strange relief. Whatever powerful men said at microphones, documents still needed to be carried into rooms, opened, questioned, and compared.

An hour later, Rosa collapsed in the kitchen. Her medicine bottle rolled across the floor, and Naomi’s scream brought the neighbors running.
