Chapter 21 - The Final Clatter

Evelyn took another staggering step forward, her breath coming in ragged, white plumes in the freezing air of the drafty cabin. The tire iron dragged along the polished pine floorboards, producing a high-pitched, agonizing screech that cut straight through the howling wind.

"Put the weapon down, Evelyn," I said, stepping out from behind Jason, my voice steady despite the sheer terror electrifying my veins. "The police are already tracking the transport van. They know where you're going. You have five minutes before this property is surrounded."

"Let them come!" she screamed, her voice cracking into a manic shriek. "Let them take whatever is left! But you don't get to win, Clara! You think Sarah loved you? You think that sanctimonious old bitch left you that money out of the goodness of her heart?"

"She left it to me because I was Eleanor’s child," I retorted, refusing to back down. "Because she knew what you were."

"Eleanor didn't die of childbirth complications, you stupid, naive girl!" Evelyn laughed, a hysterical, breathless sound that made my blood run cold. She raised her free, trembling hand, pointing a bruised, shaking finger straight at the staircase where Emma lay sleeping. "Sarah killed her! Sarah locked Eleanor in the attic of this very lake house until she signed away her parental rights! Eleanor threw herself off the boathouse roof into the freezing ice the night you were born!"

The wind outside shrieked like a dying animal, rattling the heavy glass windowpanes until they vibrated.

Jason moved instantly, lunging forward with the iron poker to disarm her. "That's enough! Drop it!"

Evelyn swung the tire iron with unnatural, desperate strength, connecting with the iron poker in a spray of sparks. The force knocked Jason off balance onto the slick hardwood floor.

Before Jason could recover, Evelyn bolted not toward us, but straight toward the wooden staircase leading to Emma's nursery.

"Jason!" I screamed, lunging after her.

I caught the tail of her soaked windbreaker at the third step, pulling with all my weight. Evelyn shrieked, tumbling backward down the stairs, dragging me down with her in a tangle of limbs, wet fabric, and flailing iron.

We hit the floor hard. The tire iron flew from her grip, skittering across the hearth and landing with a loud clatter against Grandma Sarah's brass candy dish sitting on the side table.

Jason was on his feet in a second, pinning Evelyn’s arms behind her back against the floorboards. She thrashed like a wild animal, spitting blood and mud, her manic laughter echoing through the shadowy room.

Suddenly, through the howling tempest outside, the high-low wail of emergency sirens cut through the night. Blue and red flashing lights fractured through the frosted living room windows, painting the dark timber walls in strobing, violent hues.

Tires screeched to a halt on the gravel drive. Heavy boots slammed onto the porch.

"Massachusetts State Police! Drop any weapons and show your hands!" a voice bellowed through an amplifier.

Evelyn stopped thrashing. Pinned under Jason’s grip, she turned her bruised, bleeding face toward me, her eyes gleaming with a triumph that chilled me far worse than any blade.

"You think this ends with me in a cage, Clara?" she whispered, her voice dripping with venomous amusement. "Go look at the birth registry Sarah sealed in the chimney brick upstairs. Emma isn't the first premature baby this family traded for a trust fund. Ask Jason where he really was the night you conceived."

Before I could breathe, before the officers breached the shattered front door with their weapons drawn, the ancient stone chimney behind us groaned.

A sharp, explosive pop resonated deep within the hearth wall, and a hidden iron flue door above the roaring fire sprang open, dropping a charred, fireproof metal lockbox directly into the glowing coals.
