Chapter 14 - The Midnight Trespasser

We didn't sleep that night. Jason sat by the front window with his hunting rifle across his knees, the porch floodlights blazing into the dense wall of pine trees that encircled the property.

I sat by Emma’s crib, watching the gentle rise and fall of her chest under her fleece sleeper. She looked so profoundly innocent, entirely unaware that her grandmother was attempting to brand her an illegitimate fraud before the entire legal system.

Around two in the morning, the heavy downpour that had started at midnight turned into a howling gale. The branches of the birch trees scraped against the second-story gutters like frantic fingernails.

Then, through the roar of the wind, came a sound that didn't belong: the sharp, metallic crunch of gravel beneath boots near the rear crawlspace of the cabin.

Emma stirred, letting out a soft whimper. I immediately rested my hand on her back, shushing her gently until she settled, my senses dialed to absolute panic. Downstairs, I heard the faint creak of floorboards. Jason was moving.

I grabbed the heavy brass candlestick from Emma’s dresser and slipped silently out into the upstairs hallway. Looking down over the banister, I saw Jason pressed flat against the wall near the mudroom door, his silhouette illuminated only by the faint blue pilot light of the kitchen stove.

The brass doorknob jiggled. Once. Twice.

Then came the telltale splintering sound of a crowbar levering against the deadbolt. The lock gave way with a sharp pop.

The door swung inward, bringing with it a gust of freezing rain and the smell of wet soil. A figure cloaked in an oversized black slicker stepped into the kitchen, carrying a high-powered flashlight and a canvas duffel bag. The intruder didn't go for the silver or electronics; instead, the beam of light swept directly toward the home office desk where our filing cabinets were located.

"Don't move," Jason’s voice barked through the dark, terrifying in its stillness. "Raise your hands or I swear to God I'll fire."

The intruder froze instantly, dropping the crowbar onto the kitchen tile with a loud clatter. The flashlight beam snapped upward, catching Jason’s leveled barrel.

"Wait! Don't shoot! Please, Jason, don't shoot!" a frantic, high-pitched voice cried out.

I hurried down the stairs, flicking on the overhead hallway lights.

The intruder raised trembling hands, pulling down the soaked hood of the slicker. Staring back at us, shivering, smeared with mud and streaked with mascara, was my younger sister, Vanessa.
