Chapter 18 - The Safe Deposit Box

The revelation struck the room like a sonic boom.
Jason took a step forward, his jaw tight. "What the hell are you talking about?"
"Dad had an affair thirty-two years ago," Vanessa said, speaking rapidly as if the words burned her tongue. "With Sarah’s youngest sister, Eleanor. Eleanor died of complications during childbirth. Grandma Sarah couldn't bear the public scandal of an illegitimate child tearing the Holloway social standing apart, so she forced Evelyn and Dad to adopt the baby and pretend it was their own."
I felt the room spinning again. My hands went numb. "I... I’m Eleanor’s daughter?"
"Yes," Vanessa said softly. "That’s why Evelyn hated you from the moment you took your first breath. Every time she looked at you, she didn't see her child—she saw her husband’s betrayal and Sarah’s favorite sister. When Dad died, Sarah rewrote her will to ensure that Eleanor’s line—your line—inherited the primary estate and Bear Lake. Mom only stayed in the picture because Sarah paid her an astronomical monthly stipend to keep the adoption secret until Emma was born."
"Because Sarah wanted the lineage to pass directly to Clara's child," Robert Vance said, realization dawning in his eyes as he pulled out his legal notebook. "The clause in Sarah’s will didn't specify 'Evelyn’s descendants.' It specified *Sarah’s direct maternal bloodline*. That's why Evelyn needed Clara to stay under her thumb! If Clara discovered she was Eleanor’s biological daughter, Evelyn had zero legal standing to ever claim a dime of the Holloway family trust."
"And that's why she brought that dog bowl to Christmas dinner," I breathed, the horrific puzzle pieces finally locking together after a lifetime of cruelty. "She knew her stipend was ending. She knew the trust was vesting in Emma. She wanted to provoke me into walking away and cutting all ties so she could declare me 'abandoned' under the old family bylaws."

"Where is the vault, Vanessa?" Jason demanded.
"First National Vault of Boston, Box 414," Vanessa answered instantly. "Mom keeps the key hidden inside the hollow base of the antique silver tea set she took from the townhouse. She’s meeting Arthur Pendelton at the downtown vault tomorrow at nine in the morning to clear it out before the court injunction takes effect."
