Chapter 5 - Economic Decapitation

At 01:15 AM, while the rest of the city slept, the financial heart of the Miller empire was systematically guillotined.
Inside a command trailer deployed in the hospital’s rear parking lot, four cyber warfare specialists from the National Security Agency sat in front of glowing multi-screen workstations. Beside them stood the Regional Director of the Securities and Exchange Commission, flanked by two armed federal marshals.
“Target identified: Miller Capital Holdings, Cayman Islands subsidiary ‘Aegis Trust’,” the lead analyst announced. “Executing emergency asset freeze under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act.”
With a single keystroke, eight hundred million dollars in liquid capital vanished from the global banking system.
Seconds later, accounts in Zurich, Luxembourg, and Singapore triggered automatic fraud alerts. The master ledger recovered from Rosalie’s decrypted files provided the exact routing numbers, offshore shell company identifiers, and digital signatures tied directly to Catherine Miller’s biometric credentials.
Simultaneously, the New York Stock Exchange received an emergency halt order for all trading related to Miller Capital’s publicly traded logistics and real estate subsidiaries.
By sunrise, the Miller name wouldn't just be ruined—it would be toxic.
Back on the fourth floor of St. Jude’s, Catherine sat handcuffed to a stainless-steel bench in an empty consultation room. Her designer makeup was smeared with cold sweat, her immaculate hair disheveled. Across from her, Julian was curled in a fetal position on the floor, softly sobbing to himself.
The door swung open, and I walked in, followed by Colonel Briggs and two special agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
Catherine glared at me with pure venom. “You think this little show of force scares me, Sinclair? The moment the sun comes up and my legal team realizes I’ve been detained without charges, the federal courts will issue a writ of habeas corpus so fast your head will spin.”
“There will be no legal team, Catherine,” I said, tossing a stack of documents onto the table in front of her.
The top sheet was an official notice from the United States Treasury Department.
Beneath it was a seizure warrant signed by the Chief Judge of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court.
Catherine glanced at the paperwork, her sneer freezing mid-expression. “What... what is this?”
“At twelve-thirty tonight, Miller Capital Holdings was designated a Foreign Transnational Criminal Organization,” one of the FBI agents stated clinically. “All domestic and foreign assets have been seized. All corporate accounts have been frozen. The retainers for your high-priced defense attorneys have been classified as proceeds of narcotics trafficking and impounded. As of ten minutes ago, Mrs. Miller, you are legally indigent.”
Catherine’s breath caught in her throat. “Indigent? I am worth four billion dollars!”
“You are worth nothing,” I said coldly. “You don't own a single dollar. You don't own your cars. You don't own your private jets. And by tomorrow morning, you won't even own the clothes on your back.”
Julian let out a wailing cry from the floor. “Mother, please! Tell them! Give them whatever they want!”
“Shut up, you pathetic coward!” Catherine screamed at her son, kicking at him with her heels. “I built this family! I built this empire with my bare hands!”
“You built it on the bodies of innocent people,” I said, leaning down across the table until my eyes were level with hers. “And on the body of my father.”
Catherine went rigid.
The air left the room. For the first time, genuine, unadulterated fear flashed in the depths of her dark eyes.
“You... you know,” she whispered.
“I know everything,” I said softly. “I know about the flight maintenance log you tampered with ten years ago. I know about the bribe you paid the chief crash investigator. And I know about the black box sitting inside the safe behind the oil portrait of your great-grandfather in your Grandview penthouse.”
Catherine’s mouth opened, but no sound came out. Her arrogance, her generational pride, her belief that she was a god among mortals—all of it shattered into jagged pieces.
“Briggs,” I said without looking away from her.
“Sir!”
