Chapter 25 - The Sins of the Mother

I received Rosalie’s emergency beacon while our Black Hawk helicopter was still twenty miles outside Boston airspace.
"Alexander! The Vance Tower was hit!" Bishop yelled over the rotor noise, his fingers flying across the tactical communications board. "Multiple drone detonations on the executive floor! Structural integrity compromised!"
The world inside my chest turned to pure, incandescent rage. "Get me a direct line to her locator beacon now!"
The headset crackled. Through the static, I heard coughing, the screech of fire alarms, and the distinct sound of a 9mm round firing.
"Rose!" I bellowed into the mic. "Report!"
"I'm here!" her voice gasped, punctuated by another deafening gunshot. "I'm alive, Alexander! We’re in the west stairwell! Two hitmen in maintenance uniforms tried to intercept us coming down the 48th floor. I took one down, but Bishop’s men are pinned!"
"Hold your position! We are five minutes out. Roof insertion!"
I ripped my tactical helmet on, tightening the chinstrap, and checked the chamber of my customized HK416 rifle.
"Pilot! Put us directly on the helipad!" I roared. "No hover, no delay—skids down!"
The helicopter banked violently over Boston Harbor, banking hard against the gray skyline. Plumes of black smoke billowed from the upper windows of the Vance Tower. Below, dozens of emergency vehicles were swarming the streets, but on the roof, three hostile operatives were already planting breaching charges on the stairwell access door to finish off Rosalie and the survivors.
"Green light! Go! Go! Go!"
The side doors slid open. The freezing Boston wind hit my face like a slap.
I didn't wait for the skids to touch. I leaped from eight feet up, landing in a combat roll across the gravel-covered roof.
The three operatives spun around, raising their weapons.
My rifle barked three times in semi-automatic succession.
*Crack. Crack. Crack.*
Three targets, three fatal hits through their unarmored throats. They collapsed before their bodies even registered the impact.
I kicked the heavy steel access door open, blowing the hinges off with a high-impact breaching slug. "Rosalie!"
From the smoke-choked stairwell below, she appeared. Her face was streaked with soot, her designer blazer torn, holding an empty pistol with its slide locked back. But when she saw me, her posture didn't collapse—she stepped forward, her eyes locked onto mine with terrifying resolve.
"She’s in the harbor," Rosalie said without catching her breath, pointing south toward the industrial docks. "Before the drones hit, Victoria’s feed leaked an offshore IP address. A private superyacht named *The Obsidian Queen*. She’s running the entire syndicate from international waters."

I pulled Rosalie into my chest for a single, crushing second, feeling her heart hammering against mine. "Are you hurt?"
"I’m angry, Alexander," she whispered against my neck, her fingers gripping the tactical vest over my ribs. "End this."
