Chapter 7 - The Interrogation Breakdown

By midnight, the grand Carter family was distributed across four separate windowless interrogation rooms at the federal courthouse in Cedar Falls.

Brad sat in room three, his hands shackled to the center loop of a stainless-steel table, his suit ruined, his eyes swollen and bloodshot.

Across from him sat Prosecutor Sarah Vance and Agent Ross, with a thick stack of printed financial ledgers between them.

"Brad, let's talk about the three-million-dollar loan application submitted to Iowa State Bank this morning," Prosecutor Vance began smoothly.

"I didn't submit anything!" Brad lied frantically, sweat dripping from his chin onto his orange institutional jumpsuit.

"Megan had access to my files! She fabricated those numbers to frame me because we had a marital argument!"

Prosecutor Vance didn't even blink.

She pressed play on a digital audio recorder on the table.

Brad’s own voice filled the sterile room, clear, arrogant, and unmistakable:

“The girl is signing the collateral pledge today, Dad. The bank loan clears by noon, and we transfer two million to the Cayman trust before the state auditors arrive.”

Brad’s jaw dropped open, his throat bobbing as he struggled to find oxygen in the cold room.

"Where... where did you get that?" he choked out, his arrogance completely evaporating into pure, unvarnished panic.

"Your wife retrieved the recording from your father's private safe six hours before you breached the bank," Agent Ross answered coldly.

"We also have the security footage from the bank lobby showing your courier delivering the forged package at eleven o'clock."

"Under federal sentencing guidelines, Bradley, you are facing twenty to twenty-five years at the federal penitentiary in Leavenworth."

Brad began to weep, his chest convulsing with violent, ragged sobs as he slammed his forehead against the metal table.

"It was my father!" Brad wailed, completely breaking down and abandoning every shred of family loyalty.

"Dad controlled Hawkeye Materials! He made me sign the city permits!"

"He told me that if I didn't marry someone with clean credit, the bank would foreclose on the downtown buildings!"

"I never wanted to hurt Megan! It was my mother's idea to slap her at dinner to see if she would stay quiet!"

In room one, Patricia was experiencing her own terrifying collapse.

Stripped of her jewelry, her designer clothes replaced by coarse prison cotton, she sat shivering under the harsh fluorescent light.

When shown the Cayman account transfers bearing her signature, she turned on her husband without a second of hesitation.

"Richard forced me to sign those offshore corporate resolutions!" Patricia screamed, tears ruining her expensive makeup.

"He threatened to leave me penniless! I didn't know the money came from the city!"

"Take the houses! Take the cars! Just don't send me to prison with common criminals!"

Within four hours, the entire Carter family had turned on one another like starving rats trapped in a flooded drain.

Every confession was documented, every offshore account was frozen, and every municipal bribe was traced back to its recipient.

The dynasty that had terrorized Cedar Falls for twenty years was completely, irreversibly pulverized from the inside out.
