Chapter 6 - The 5:00 PM Raid

At 4:45 PM, the Carter estate in Cedar Falls was bathed in the pale, fading light of a cold Iowa sunset.
Inside the grand dining room, Patricia had ordered the domestic staff to prepare a lavish roast beef dinner.
She wore her pearl necklace and diamond rings, sipping vintage red wine while checking her gold watch every thirty seconds.
Brad sat at the table wearing his fresh city-issued suit, his phone resting beside his plate, waiting for my frantic call of surrender.
Richard stood by the stone fireplace, swirling a glass of aged bourbon, looking completely relaxed and untouchable.
"She'll be here in ten minutes," Patricia laughed, cutting into a warm roll.
"Farm girls have no spine for the cold. She's probably sitting in her cheap little car crying outside the city limits."
"When she walks through that door, Brad, you make her get on her knees before you let her sign," Kelsey chimed in, applying lip gloss.
"She needs to learn her place before we let her live in the carriage house."
Brad chuckled arrogantly, picking up his fork.
"Don't worry, Kelsey. By the time I finish with her credit score, she won't even be able to rent an apartment in Des Moines."
Suddenly, the heavy iron security gates at the end of the long driveway groaned under the impact of a hydraulic battering ram.
A thunderous metallic crash echoed through the quiet neighborhood, shaking the dining room crystal chandeliers.
"What on earth was that?!" Patricia shrieked, jumping up from her chair and spilling red wine across the white tablecloth.
Richard ran to the bay window, pulling back the heavy velvet drapes.
His glass of bourbon slipped from his fingers, shattering onto the parquet floor as all color drained from his face.
Six dark tactical assault vehicles from the FBI and the United States Marshals Service were roaring up the circular driveway.
Overhead, the rhythmic thumping of a federal surveillance helicopter swept across the estate, illuminating the manicured lawn with a blinding searchlight.
"FEDERAL AGENTS! EXECUTE THE WARRANTS!" a booming voice echoed through a tactical megaphone outside.
Before Brad could take three steps toward the hallway, the heavy front double doors were breached with explosive force.
Twelve armed tactical operators in body armor and helmets swarmed into the grand foyer, their weapons raised, clearing the perimeter in ten seconds flat.
"DOWN ON THE FLOOR! EVERYBODY DOWN ON THE FLOOR NOW!"
Patricia screamed hysterically, covering her face as two female federal marshals pushed her down onto the Persian rug.
Richard scrambled backward toward the fireplace, his hands raised in trembling, frantic terror.
"This is private property! I am a member of the municipal development authority!" Richard roared, his voice cracking.
Agent Ross strode into the dining room wearing a windbreaker with gold federal insignia, accompanied by two armed marshals.
"Richard Carter, Bradley Carter, Patricia Carter, and Kelsey Carter," Agent Ross read from an illuminated tablet.
"By order of the United States District Court, you are under arrest for federal racketeering, wire fraud, bank fraud, and municipal bribery."
Brad bolted toward the back kitchen exit, but two operators intercepted him, driving him face-down onto the cold hardwood floor.
His nose slammed against the oak planks, blood spurting across his crisp white collar.
The metallic click of heavy steel handcuffs snapped around Brad’s wrists with brutal, final efficiency.
"Megan!" Brad screamed into the floorboards, spitting blood and tears. "Megan, you crazy bitch! What did you do?!"
Agent Ross stepped over Brad’s back, looking down with cold, absolute contempt.
"Your wife didn't do this, Bradley," Agent Ross said softly.
May you like
"Your own greed did."
"Now get up. The holding cells in Waterloo are waiting."
