Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Well

Before I could answer, the door swung open and Adam walked in. His eyes were red-rimmed, his wedding tuxedo replaced by gray sweatpants and a rumpled shirt. In his hand, he held a sleek pink iPhone.
"Get out, Evelyn," Adam said quietly. The lethal chill in his voice made my mother take a step back.
"Adam, darling, I was just making sure your sister-in-law understood the gravity—"
"I said get out," he repeated, louder this time. "Before I call the precinct captain, who happens to be my uncle, and have you arrested for witness tampering."
Evelyn glared at me, gathered her documents with trembling fingers, and stormed out, her heels clicking aggressively down the linoleum hallway.
Adam sat on the plastic chair beside my bed and buried his face in his hands. "Mara, I am so sorry. God, I am so sorry."
"Adam, you shouldn't be here," I whispered, fighting the exhaustion that was creeping into my bones. "You just got married. Vanessa is your wife."
"She’s not my wife," Adam said, lifting his head. His expression was hollow, shattered. "We signed the church register, but I refused to file the civil marriage certificate with the county clerk. I left the reception immediately after the ambulance took you."
He unlocked the pink phone he was holding. It was Vanessa’s secondary phone—the one she thought she had hidden safely in the bridal suite.
"She left this charging in the dressing room," Adam said, turning the screen toward me. "Look at what she sent to all our mutual friends, the bridal party, and my family group chat an hour before the ceremony."

On the screen was a forged medical report claiming I had been diagnosed with severe histrionic personality disorder and Munchausen syndrome. Vanessa had written an extensive, tragic essay: *'Please pray for my sweet sister Mara. Her jealousy over my wedding has pushed her into a psychotic break. She has threatened to harm herself today just to hurt me. If she causes a scene, please show her grace, but do not believe her lies.'*
"She planned it," I choked out, a cold dread washing over me. "She planned to push me before the wedding even began."
