Chapter 11 - The Secret in the Safe

Two months later, with the criminal trials proceeding toward inevitable life sentences, the probate court granted me unrestricted access to the Vance family manor so I could claim my personal belongings before the property was auctioned off to pay for Tyler's restitution fees.

Adam insisted on coming with me, waiting in the living room while I used my crutches to walk slowly down the long, shadowed corridor toward my mother’s private study.

The room was cold, stripped of its original grandeur. Behind a velvet painting of our ancestral estate, I found the hidden wall safe that Evelyn had kept guarded for over twenty years. The court-appointed locksmith had already cracked the electronic combination.

I pulled open the heavy steel door, expecting to find old jewelry or family bonds.

Instead, inside lay a single, fireproof lockbox. I opened the latch and lifted the lid. Inside was a thick folder labeled: *CONFIDENTIAL - ST. JUDE'S MATERNITY HOSPITAL, 1998.*

My hands trembled as I opened the yellowed pages. Inside was a certified DNA test, a private investigator's report, and an original birth certificate.

Twenty-four years ago, Evelyn's actual second child had died during childbirth. Terrified that my grandfather would cut off her massive monthly allowance if she failed to produce another heir, Evelyn had bought an orphaned infant from an illicit private adoption ring—me.

My eyes dropped to the final line of the adoption report, where the identity of my true biological father was listed, along with his photograph pinned to the back page.

The man in the photograph had unmistakable silver hair, piercing gray eyes, and a small anchor tattoo on his left wrist.

It was Clara Montgomery's late husband—Adam Montgomery's grandfather.

Before my mind could comprehend the sheer magnitude of what I was reading, the heavy oak door of the study clicked shut behind me.

A shadow moved in the darkness of the room. A hand reached out and clamped a chemically soaked rag violently over my mouth and nose.

"You should have left well enough alone, sister," a familiar, raspy voice whispered against my ear as the darkness rushed in to swallow me whole...
