Chapter 5 - The Reckoning

Smoke from the flashbangs hung like a pale, ghostly fog inside the warehouse.

Armed tactical officers in heavy body armor were securing the perimeter, their assault rifles lowered. In the center of the concrete floor, pinned beneath the knees of two federal agents, Julian Vance was writhing in handcuffs, his expensive Italian suit torn and covered in plaster dust, cursing furiously at the ceiling.

A few yards away, sitting against a stack of wooden crates, was Tessa.

Her blazer was torn at the shoulder, her hair was a wild, tangled mess, and she was clutching her bruised wrist against her chest.

"Tessa!" I yelled, breaking past an officer who tried to block me.

I dropped to my knees beside her and threw my arms around her neck. She collapsed into me, burying her face into my shoulder, sobbing so violently that her whole body shook.

"I said the word," she wept, her voice muffled against my jacket. "Lauren, I said the word... did it work? Did Dad get his house back?"

"It worked," I whispered, holding her tight, tears streaming down my own face. "You did it, Tess. The wire was stopped. Dad’s house is safe. It’s over."

Detective Miller walked over, taking off his tactical helmet and wiping sweat from his forehead. He looked down at Julian Vance, who was being hauled to his feet by two officers, glaring at Tessa with unbridled hatred.

"You're going away for a very long time, Julian," Miller said calmly. "Interstate wire fraud, bank fraud, grand larceny, computer intrusion, and now felony assault. You won't see the outside of a federal penitentiary until you're seventy years old."

"She was in on it!" Vance spat, blood dripping from his split lip. "She gave me the credentials! She posted the security tokens online! She's my partner! Arrest her!"

Miller stepped directly into Vance’s face. "Miss Bell wore an active wire into a hostile tactical environment, secured physical proximity for federal forensic deployment, and successfully assisted in the recovery of stolen assets under Title 18 emergency provisions. Her cooperation has been formally certified by the State Bureau of Investigation."

Miller turned his head toward the officers holding Vance. "Get this garbage out of my sight."

They dragged Vance away, kicking and screaming obscenities into the smoky air, his voice gradually fading as he was shoved into the back of a waiting police transport.

Adrian Lopez walked into the warehouse, carrying his tablet. He stopped in front of Tessa and me, looking down at my sister with a quiet, measured expression.

"Miss Bell," Adrian said.

Tessa looked up, wiping her nose with the back of her sleeve, looking terrified all over again. "Am I... am I going to prison?"

Adrian looked at me, then back at Tessa. "Ellison Risk Group is declining to press private corporate espionage charges, provided you submit to a formal settlement agreement. You will complete two hundred hours of court-ordered community service with the North Carolina Cyber-Safety Initiative, lecturing high school students on the real-world dangers of digital vanity and data privacy breaches."

Tessa blinked, as if unable to believe what she was hearing. "That's... that's it?"

"That's the legal consequence, Miss Bell," Adrian said softly. "The professional consequences, however, are entirely your own to bear."

He turned the tablet screen toward her.

Every single brand partnership Tessa had built over the last five years was gone. Her talent agency had dropped her via an official press release. Her follower count had cratered, but worse than that, the internet had collectively branded her as the poster child for reckless influencer entitlement. The comments were brutal, unforgiving, and permanent.

The digital empire she had spent her twenties building hadn't just fallen. It had vanished into thin air.

Tessa stared at the screen for a long, quiet moment.

Then, something remarkable happened.

She didn't cry. She didn't scream. She didn't throw a tantrum.

She reached out, took the tablet from Adrian’s hands, tapped the settings icon, and navigated to her profile. With a steady, deliberate finger, she clicked the red button at the bottom of the screen:

*DELETE ACCOUNT PERMANENTLY.*

A confirmation box popped up: *Are you sure? This action cannot be undone. All media, messages, and metrics will be lost.*

Tessa pressed *Confirm*.

The screen went blank.

She handed the tablet back to Adrian, took a deep breath of the cool, smoky air, and looked at me.

May you like

"I hated who I was anyway," she whispered.
