Chapter 2 - The Digital Footprint

"I didn't know," Tessa whimpered, collapsing onto Dad’s floral sofa. She pulled her knees to her chest, rocking back and forth. "I swear to God, Lauren, I didn't know! I didn't even look at the other screen! I just saw the deposit notification! I just wanted to show people that you were being a hypocrite!"

"A hypocrite?" I snapped, the rage finally burning through my initial shock. "A hypocrite about what, Tessa? About not giving you twenty thousand dollars of my hard-earned money for a fake studio run by a con artist?"

"You act like you're so much better than me!" she sobbed, mascara streaking down her cheeks in dark, jagged lines. "You always look down on me! You drive a ten-year-old Honda Civic! You wear clothes from outlet malls! You count every single penny, and then you lecture me about responsibility! I wanted to knock you off your high horse! I wanted people to see that you're just a basic, low-level corporate drone who doesn't even make real money!"

"Miss Bell," Detective Miller interrupted, his voice cutting like a razor through her hysterical excuses. "I suggest you stop screaming at your sister and start listening very carefully to what I am about to tell you."

The room went cold again.

"Julian Vance was watching your live feed," Miller stated. "He didn't just stumble upon your post. He has been monitoring your accounts, tracking your geolocation, and waiting for an opening. The moment you uploaded that video displaying your sister's active Ellison session credentials, Vance used an automated script to scrape the high-resolution frames. By twelve-forty-one—eleven minutes after you hit upload—the cryptographic tokens were entered into an offshore clearing account based out of Belize."

"Can you stop it?" Dad asked, his voice barely audible. He looked shrunken, an old man who felt the ground crumbling under his feet. "Officer... please. That house is all I have. That's my wife's memory. That's my children's home. Can you stop the money?"

Miller looked down at his shoes, a gesture that made my heart shatter. "We have the State Bureau of Investigation and the FBI Cyber Division working on an emergency freeze order right now. But because the transaction was authorized using valid, top-tier corporate cryptographic keys from an Ellison terminal, the automated clearinghouse marked it as a verified high-priority commercial disbursement. The transfer window closes in less than four hours. At five o'clock today, when the financial markets close for the weekend, those funds will be routed through a decentralized crypto-tumbler. Once that happens, Mr. Bell... the money is gone forever."

Before anyone could speak, the sound of heavy footsteps echoed on the front porch.

A tall man in a tailored charcoal suit walked into the house without knocking. He held a leather briefcase in one hand and an FBI liaison credential in the other. Behind him were two technical specialists carrying heavy Pelican cases filled with diagnostic computing gear.

"Adrian," I breathed.

It was Adrian Lopez, the Vice President of Information Security at Ellison Risk Group. He was brilliant, ruthless, and usually completely unflappable. But today, his jaw was set like carved granite.

"Lauren," Adrian said, nodding once in greeting before turning his piercing gaze toward Tessa. "You must be the sister."

Tessa shrank back into the cushions, pulling her designer jacket tighter around her shoulders. "I... I deleted it..."

"You deleted the public post," Adrian said, his voice entirely devoid of warmth. "After two thousand four hundred people downloaded the raw media file. After seventy-one scrapers mirrored it across three separate Discord fraud channels. And after Mr. Vance harvested the session keys to authorize an illicit three-hundred-and-eighty-thousand-dollar extraction against your father's estate."

Adrian turned to Detective Miller. "Detective. The Ellison executive board has authorized a full operational override. We are treating this as an active corporate infiltration and grand-scale financial extortion. Our forensic network team has traced the initial extraction IP to an industrial warehouse off South Saunders Street."

Tessa gasped. "South Saunders? That's... that's the loft! That's the studio Julian was renting for us!"

Adrian turned back to her, his dark eyes narrowing. "It isn't a studio, Miss Bell. It’s an illicit data extraction hub. And Mr. Vance isn't planning on shooting fashion videos with you on Monday. He has an executive charter flight booked out of Raleigh-Durham International Airport at eleven-forty tonight, bound for San José, Costa Rica."

The reality of the situation finally seemed to penetrate Tessa’s thick skull. Her mouth opened and closed soundlessly. The glamorous world of brand deals, aesthetic lattes, and high-status networking wasn't just unraveling—it was exposing a dark, criminal underbelly that she had eagerly invited into our family’s life.

"He lied to me," she whispered, her hands shaking uncontrollably. "He told me he loved my aesthetic. He told me I had the potential to be a top-tier creator. He said we were going to build an empire together."

"He used you, Tessa," I said, walking over to her. I picked her dropped phone off the floor. The screen was cracked, but notifications were still pouring in by the hundreds.

Sponsors she had worked with for years were publicly terminating their contracts in the comments of her other posts. Brand managers were sending frantic emails demanding refunds. The comment section under her latest photo was a bloodbath of former fans calling her a fraud, a terrible daughter, and a criminal.

"You wanted an audience," I said, my voice trembling with suppressed fury. "Well, you got one. But while you were busy trying to humiliate me over a paycheck, you handed our dad’s life to a monster."

"Lauren," Dad said softly, reaching out to touch my arm. "Don't. Not right now."

"No, Dad!" I turned to him, tears finally pricking my eyes. "She needs to hear this! She has spent five years treating this family like background props for her vanity! She films you when you're tired, she posts your personal business for strangers to laugh at, and she looked down on my job every single day because I didn't care about getting likes from people I don't even know!"

I turned back to Tessa, who was weeping openly now, her face buried in her hands.

"You thought four thousand eight hundred dollars was my salary?" I said, my voice dead and cold. "That was my voluntary bi-weekly deduction into Dad’s medical emergency trust fund, Tessa. That wasn't my paycheck. My base salary at Ellison is two hundred and eighty-five thousand dollars a year, with an annual performance bonus that could buy your entire fake influencer life three times over. I don't drive an old car because I'm broke. I drive an old car because I don't need validation from strangers to know what I'm worth!"

Tessa lifted her head, looking at me with wide, terrified eyes. The revelation of my actual compensation hit her like a physical slap, entirely dismantling the single narrative she had built to justify her superiority.

"Lauren..." she choked out. "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry..."

"Save your apologies," Adrian Lopez interrupted, setting his laptop down on Dad’s dining table and opening it with a sharp click. "Because right now, Miss Bell, you are facing twenty years in federal prison as an unindicted co-conspirator to interstate wire fraud, unauthorized corporate data breach, and identity theft."

Tessa shrieked, clutching Dad's arm. "Daddy! Please! Don't let them take me to jail!"

Dad looked at Detective Miller, his eyes pleading. "Detective... she's foolish. She's vain and she's reckless. But she isn't a thief. She didn't know."

Detective Miller pulled a set of documents from his folder. "That depends entirely on what happens in the next three hours, Mr. Bell. We have a warrant for Julian Vance's arrest, but Vance is smart. If he realizes the funds are being contested, he will trigger an immediate emergency wipe of his local servers, dump the cash into an untraceable tumbler, and disappear into the wind before our tactical team can breach the warehouse."

Miller looked directly at Tessa.

"The only way your father gets his house back, Miss Bell—and the only way you stay out of a federal penitentiary—is if Vance believes everything is proceeding exactly according to plan."

Tessa swallowed hard, her chest heaving. "What... what do you want me to do?"

Miller leaned in close.

May you like

"You're going to put on that camera face you love so much," Miller said coldly. "You're going to walk into that warehouse on South Saunders Street. And you're going to hand Julian Vance the bait that puts him behind bars."
