Chapter 4 - Ninety Seconds in the Dark

The audio feed inside the surveillance van hissed with static as Tessa reached the entrance of the warehouse.

"Audio check," Detective Miller murmured into his headset. "Can you hear her footsteps?"

"Loud and clear," the technician responded. "Heart rate monitor embedded in the patch shows one hundred and forty beats per minute. She’s terrified, but she's moving forward."

On Adrian’s primary screen, a map of the warehouse's internal network glowed with red and blue nodes. "I have visual on Vance's local router," Adrian said, his fingers poised over his keyboard. "The moment she crosses within twenty feet of that access point, my payload will begin the packet injection. I need ninety seconds of uninterrupted connection to terminate the wire transfer."

I leaned over Adrian’s shoulder, my knuckles white as I gripped the back of his chair.

Through the audio feed, we heard a heavy metal door creak open. The echoing hollow acoustics of an industrial warehouse filled the van.

"Julian?" Tessa’s voice came through the receiver. It sounded small, fragile, but remarkably steady. "Julian, are you here?"

A few moments of agonizing silence followed. Then, the rhythmic sound of polished leather shoes clicking against polished concrete.

"Tessa," a smooth, baritone voice replied. "You're late. I thought we agreed you'd have the paperwork finalized by noon."

Julian Vance sounded utterly composed. There was no panic in his voice, no urgency, just the slick, velvet condescension of a professional predator who believed he was the smartest person in any room he occupied.

"I know, I'm sorry," Tessa replied, her voice breathless. "It was... crazy at my dad's house. My sister came home early."

In the van, Detective Miller raised an eyebrow. "Good girl," he muttered. "She's keeping the cover story consistent."

"Ah, yes," Julian chuckled softly. "Your charming corporate sister. I saw the video you posted, by the way. Quite amusing. Though a bit amateurish, don't you think? Airing family grievances for cheap engagement?"

"It worked, didn't it?" Tessa countered, playing the part of the vain, shallow influencer with astonishing accuracy. "I gained six thousand followers in two hours. Everyone is talking about it."

"Everyone certainly is," Julian said, his tone cooling slightly. "Which is precisely why it was reckless. Clout is like gasoline, Tessa. It can power an engine, or it can burn your house down. You shouldn't have filmed that computer screen."

"Who cares about her boring spreadsheet?" Tessa said, her voice rising slightly. "Look, Julian, I didn't come here to talk about Lauren. I came here because I got the money."

A pause.

"Did you?" Julian asked, genuine interest creeping back into his voice.

"A cashier's check. Twenty thousand dollars. An emergency advance from an angel investor I know in Charlotte. I have it right here."

We heard the rustle of the paper envelope.

"Adrian?" I whispered, my heart in my throat.

"She's in range," Adrian replied instantly, his eyes fixed on a progress bar that had just appeared on his monitor. *INJECTION INITIALIZED: 5%... 10%...*

"Ninety seconds started now," Adrian said. "One minute and twenty-five seconds remaining."

Through the speakers, we heard footsteps approaching.

"Let me see that," Julian said.

A moment later, the sound of an envelope being torn open.

"Well, well," Julian murmured. "You actually pulled it off. Certified funds. Made out directly to *Apex Loft Productions LLC*."

"So we're partners?" Tessa asked. "Official partners? You'll sign the commercial lease today?"

"Of course we're partners, darling," Julian said smoothly. "We're going to build something truly exceptional here. Let me just deposit this via our commercial mobile portal, and then we can celebrate."

*PROGRESS: 38%... 45%...*

"Forty-five seconds left," Adrian muttered under his breath. "Come on, stay there..."

Suddenly, the smooth tone in Julian’s voice vanished.

"Wait a minute," Julian said.

The silence that followed was suffocating.

"What is this, Tessa?" Julian asked, his voice dead, devoid of all charm.

"What do you mean?" Tessa replied, panic bleeding through her voice. "It's a cashier's check!"

"The issuing bank," Julian said coldly. "First Horizon Bank, Wake Forest Branch. Timestamped twelve-fifteen today."

"Yes! I went there right after I left my dad's house!"

"First Horizon Bank in Wake Forest closed its commercial teller window at eleven o'clock this morning due to a regional server upgrade," Julian stated, each word dropping like ice. "I know this because my offshore wire was routed through their automated clearing gateway thirty minutes ago."

In the van, Miller cursed violently. "He caught the branch timestamp! Tactical team, prepare to breach!"

"Wait!" Adrian hissed. "Miller, wait! The override is at sixty-five percent! If you breach now, he’ll smash the terminal! If he cuts the power before the ninety seconds are up, the wire transfer locks in automatically! I need twenty more seconds!"

"He's going to hurt her!" I screamed, grabbing Miller’s tactical vest. "Listen to him!"

Through the receiver, Julian's voice was an enraged snarl. "Who gave you this check, Tessa? Who have you been talking to?"

"Julian, please! You're hurting my arm!" Tessa cried out.

"Who was in your father's house?!" Julian roared. "The Ellison Risk Group deployed a counter-intrusion firewall against my Belize account two minutes ago! Did your sister figure it out?! Did she send you here to stall me?!"

"No! Julian, let go of me!"

"You stupid, vain little girl!" Julian snarled, the sound of a scuffle erupting through the microphone. "Did you really think I wanted to start a company with you?! You're an empty, talentless vessel! You're a walking security flaw! I used your photos to drain your father's house, and now you brought the feds to my doorstep!"

"Miller, breach!" I yelled.

"Adrian?!" Miller barked.

"Eighty-two percent!" Adrian shouted back, his fingers slamming into the keyboard. "Five seconds! Five seconds!"

Through the speaker, Tessa’s voice screamed out with piercing, desperate clarity:

*"CONTINGENCY! LAUREN, CONTINGENCY!"*

"BREACH! BREACH! BREACH!" Detective Miller roared into his radio.

The sound of flashbangs detonating through the metal walls of the warehouse rattled the van. Distant concussions of sound—*BANG! BANG!*—followed by the screech of metal doors being smashed off their hinges by tactical rams.

"POLICE! GET ON THE GROUND! DROP THE WEAPON! DOWN ON THE GROUND RIGHT NOW!"

Shouts, screams, the shattering of glass, and the dull thud of heavy bodies hitting concrete echoed through the audio receiver.

In the van, a sharp, green chime chimed from Adrian’s monitor.

*INJECTION COMPLETE.*

*WIRE DISBURSEMENT: TERMINATED.*

*SECURITY TOKENS: REVOKED.*

*FUNDS RESTORED TO ORIGINATING ESCROW: $380,000.00.*

Adrian let out a long, ragged exhale and slumped back in his chair. "We got it. The transfer is dead. The money is back in your father's account."

I didn't care about the money.

May you like

I tore open the rear doors of the van and sprinted down the gravel alley toward the warehouse, Miller yelling after me to stay back.
