Chapter 10 - The Twenty-Sixth Birthday

My twenty-sixth birthday arrived on a crisp, golden autumn day.
There was no blue dress hidden in the back of the closet. Instead, I wore a sleek emerald jumpsuit that made me feel powerful, radiant, and completely unstoppable.
My apartment was filled with laughter. Maya, my closest friends from the city, and a few neighbors I had grown close to were gathered around my living room, sharing wine, cheese, and stories.
On the center table sat a large, decadent chocolate birthday cake.
Across the top, written in elegant gold lettering, were the words: Happy Birthday, Claire. This one is all yours.
When it was time to cut the cake, everyone gathered around. My phone sat face-down on the counter, silent and ignored. There were no frantic texts, no emergency calls, no guilt trips waiting in the wings.
Just the warm glow of candlelight, the sound of people cheering my name, and a future stretching out before me that was brighter than I had ever dared to imagine.

I closed my eyes, blew out the candles in a single breath, and smiled.
I had left a toxic family behind in the dark, and in doing so, I had finally found my light.
