Chapter 9 - Closing the Circle

Six months after I walked out the back door, I received a final piece of news about my family.

Madison had finally gotten a job—as a receptionist at a local dental office—mostly because Dad put his foot down and threatened to lock her out of the Wi-Fi. She hated it, complained every single day, but for the first time in her life, she was experiencing consequences.

Mom and Dad had downsized. They sold the large suburban house—the one where I had spent years playing second fiddle to a ghost of entitlement—and moved into a modest, manageable townhouse across town.

They had tried to reach out one last time through a formal letter delivered by mail, asking if we could grab coffee "whenever I was ready."

I read the letter at my kitchen table while sipping morning coffee. I didn't feel anger. I felt closure. I placed the letter in my shredder, watched it turn into ribbons of paper, and tossed it into the recycle bin.

I didn't need their coffee. I didn't need their validation. I had built a life that belonged entirely to me.
