Chapter 5 - Reality Bites Back Home

While I was hanging curtains in my new living room, my parents' world was continuing its downward spiral.

Without my income, Dad fell behind on the mortgage payment for the first time in twenty years. The bank sent a warning letter. At the same time, Madison’s credit card was permanently frozen due to a maxed-out balance and missed payments.

Unable to shop online or order delivery, Madison’s tantrums escalated from throwing lamps to screaming matches that echoed down the suburban street. Neighbors began avoiding their house.

Uncle Tom told me later—via a burner phone I set up for family members I actually liked—that Mom had spent an entire afternoon crying at the kitchen table because she had to hand-wash dishes for the first time in a decade.

“Your dad is furious, not just at you, but at himself,” Tom told me. “He finally looked at the household ledger and realized you were paying nearly forty percent of their monthly overhead while Madison was getting allowance money.”

“Karma is a quiet thing,” I replied, stirring sugar into my coffee.

“They’re talking about coming to look for you,” Tom warned. “Your mom found out from a coworker that you updated your LinkedIn profile with a new city location.”

“Let them look,” I said calmly. “Finding a city is different from finding a person who wants to be found.”

The truth was, I wasn't hiding out of fear. I was hiding because I refuse to be anyone's emergency backup plan ever again.
