Chapter 6 - A Brand New Foundation

Six months later, spring had returned to Lake Shore Drive. The trees along Lake Michigan were blooming in brilliant shades of pink and green, and the cool lake breeze felt fresh and full of promise.

I stood on the balcony of my Gold Coast penthouse, holding a mug of fresh coffee. The oak floors inside had been refinished, the dining room restructured, and every trace of Ryan and Denise Mercer had been erased from my life.

Ryan had accepted a plea deal to avoid federal prison time, receiving three years of felony probation, mandatory anger management, and a permanent criminal record that effectively destroyed his corporate career. Deprived of her son's fake wealth, Denise had been forced to downsize into a tiny suburban apartment, her social standing completely ruined among the circles where she used to brag.

My phone chimed on the patio table. It was a message from my project management team at the hospital site: Phase One approved ahead of schedule. Great job, Director Hart.

I smiled, setting the phone down and taking a deep breath of the crisp Chicago air.

I was no longer the quiet bride waiting for approval from a man who didn't deserve me. I was the architect of my own destiny, standing on a foundation built on my own strength, my own truth, and a future that belonged entirely to me.
