Chapter 1 - The Boiling Point

The steam rose in a thick cloud as the boiling soup hit my leg. The heat burned straight through my fabric shorts, scorching my skin in an instant. I gasped, stumbling backward and knocking over a dining chair as a sharp, agonizing pain spread across my thigh.

"Look at what you made me do!" Denise cried out, her voice dramatically rising in artificial panic. She set the empty bowl down with a sharp clatter and pulled her hands back as if she were the victim. "Ryan! She lunged at me! She tried to grab the bowl from my hands!"

I looked at Ryan, my eyes wide with disbelief, expecting him to help me, expecting him to run for cold towels or an ice pack.

Instead, Ryan’s face twisted in dark, furious rage. He stepped toward me, ignoring the steaming soup dripping onto the oak floor, ignoring my reddening skin.

"How dare you disrespect my mother in our own home?" he snarled.

"Ryan, she threw it at me!" I choked out, tears of pain pricking my eyes. "She tipped the bowl—"

Before I could finish the sentence, Ryan swung his arm. His open palm struck my cheek with a cracking sound that echoed through the condo. My head snapped to the side, my lip catching on my teeth, filling my mouth with the warm, metallic taste of blood.

"Get on your knees and apologize to my mother," Ryan commanded, his voice trembling with unchecked anger.

Denise folded her arms behind him, her eyes shining with quiet, malicious triumph. "A wife who disrespects her husband’s mother doesn’t deserve to stand in this family."

I stood there, one hand pressed against my throbbing cheek, my right leg burning furiously. I looked at the man I had married three days ago—the man who had sworn under God and before my family to cherish and protect me.

And in that quiet, terrible second, the scales fell from my eyes.

I didn't cry. I didn't beg. A strange, cold calm washed over me, numbing the physical pain. I wiped the blood from the corner of my lip with the back of my hand and looked Ryan dead in the eye.

"I heard you," I said softly.

"Then do it," he growled.

I stared at him, and then at his mother, and I began to laugh. It was a cold, bitter sound that made Ryan’s jaw tighten.

"You think this is funny?" Ryan stepped closer, raising his hand again.

"No," I said, stepping back just enough to reach the wall-mounted intercom. "I think I finally understand what I married. And I think you have thirty seconds to leave my property before the police remove you."
