Chapter 5 - The Legal Avalanche

By noon that same day, the storm outside had cleared, giving way to a pale, freezing Chicago sun.

I sat in the office of my family’s senior attorney, Evelyn Vance, on the top floor of a high-rise overlooking the Loop. A doctor had already treated the burns on my leg and documented the contusion on my cheek for the police report.

Evelyn reviewed the stack of documents on her desk, her face set in a expression of cold, professional fury.

"The criminal charges are solid, Claire," Evelyn said, adjusting her glasses. "Ryan’s mugshot is already being processed, and his bail hearing is set for tomorrow morning. Given the physical evidence and the building security footage capturing his mother's entrance and his arrest, he won't be getting off lightly."

"What about his employment?" I asked, sipping my tea.

"Halston Industrial Group is a corporate client of our firm," Evelyn smiled thinly. "I spoke directly with their chief legal counsel an hour ago. Ryan's conduct violates their corporate ethics clause. His termination letter is being drafted as we speak. By 5:00 PM, he will be unemployed, facing felony charges, and broke."

"And the prenuptial agreement?"

"Enforced instantly," Evelyn replied, sliding a document across the table for my signature. "The divorce filing will be completed by tomorrow. Because of the abuse clause, the marriage will be annulled, erasing any legal connection between you two as if it never happened."

I took the pen and signed my name—Claire Hart—with a steady, firm hand.

For two years, I had shrunk myself to fit into Ryan’s fragile ego. I had let his mother insult my career, my family, and my choices, believing that patience was the price of love. But standing up for myself hadn't broken my life; it had saved it.
