Chapter 6 - A Brand New Foundation

A year after the chaos that nearly tore our world apart, our home in Cary felt completely transformed.

The white columns gleamed in the afternoon sun, the circular driveway was free of police cruisers, and the backyard overlooking the creek was a sanctuary of peace, laughter, and genuine warmth.

We hosted a second gathering—not a flashy, expensive housewarming with caterers and acquaintances we barely knew, but an intimate backyard barbecue for our truest friends, loyal neighbors, and my brother Reid.

There were no white orchids. There was no burgundy silk dress. Just good food, cold drinks, and the sound of unforced laughter carrying across the lawn.

I stood on the back patio holding a glass of iced tea, wearing a simple sundress, looking out at the sun setting behind the trees.

Grant walked up behind me, sliding his hand into mine, his fingers intertwining with mine with absolute, unwavering security.

“You know,” Grant murmured, looking out over the yard, “for a long time, I thought loyalty meant tolerating toxic people just because we shared DNA.”

I leaned my head against his shoulder. “And what do you think it means now?”

Grant squeezed my hand tightly, lifting it to press a warm kiss against my knuckles.

“It means protecting the person who stood by you when you had nothing,” he said softly, looking down into my eyes with profound, unshakeable devotion. “It means building a future with someone who loves you for who you are, not what you can provide.”

The wind blew gently through the Cary trees, carrying the sweet scent of autumn leaves and woodsmoke. The past was behind us, the poison was gone, and our foundation—forged through fire, truth, and resilience—was finally unbreakable.
