Chapter 5 - Closing the Chapter

Six months after the disastrous housewarming party, the legal proceedings against Darlene and Warren reached their conclusion in the Wake County Superior Court.
Faced with overwhelming evidence, including Sarah Chen’s meticulous financial audits, the pawn shop receipts, and Reid’s damning audio recordings, Warren Pike accepted a plea deal resulting in a four-year prison sentence without the possibility of parole.
Darlene, realizing her golden-boy son was no longer answering her prison phone calls or funding her legal defense, attempted to plead remorse before Judge Harrison.
The judge was unimpressed.
“You weaponized your own family, exploited elderly contacts, and engaged in calculated extortion,” Judge Harrison stated firmly from the bench before striking his gavel. “Actions have consequences.”
She received a three-year sentence at the North Carolina Correctional Institution for Women.
Grant and I chose not to attend the sentencing. We spent that Tuesday morning planting a vegetable garden behind our kitchen window, basking in the quiet, peaceful rhythm of our actual life.
There were no fake emergencies, no demanding phone calls from greedy relatives, and no manufactured crises demanding our attention or our savings.
When the mail carrier delivered the afternoon letters, the stack consisted of mortgage statements addressed to us, business logistics contracts for Grant’s expanding fleet, and a postcard from Reid inviting us down to Durham for a weekend cookout at his newly renovated home.
Grant opened the front door, stepping out onto the sunlit porch, breathing in the crisp autumn air. He looked down at the circular driveway where the azalea bushes were blooming in brilliant shades of pink and white.
He walked back inside, wrapped his arms around my waist from behind as I stood at the kitchen sink, and rested his chin on my shoulder.
“Penny for your thoughts?” he whispered.
I smiled, looking out the sparkling window toward the wooded creek.
“I was just thinking,” I said, turning around in his embrace, “that we finally have the housewarming party we actually deserved.”

Grant pulled me close, pressing a tender kiss to the top of my head.
“No drama,” he agreed softly. “Just us.”
