Chapter 2 - The Ambush at the Garden Gate

Reid’s heavy boots crunched loudly across the patio pavers. The gathered guests parted automatically, whispering anxiously among themselves as they sensed the tectonic shift in the atmosphere.
Grant immediately stepped over to me, wrapping his jacket securely around my shoulders to cover the torn dress, his hand resting protectively on my waist.
Reid stopped three feet away from Darlene and Warren. He didn't shout. He didn't throw a punch. He simply looked down at the blood on my shin, then up at Darlene, and his dark eyes burned with a lethal, controlled fury.
“Thirty thousand dollars,” Reid said, his voice carrying an icy, razor-sharp edge that sliced through the warm afternoon air. “That’s a very specific number, Darlene. Especially considering my land sale in Durham cleared for thirty-eight thousand, four hundred and twenty dollars after all closing costs and capital gains taxes were deducted. Where did you get the thirty thousand figure?”
Darlene swallowed hard, her composure slipping. “I… I heard you talking about it at dinner!”
“No,” Reid stepped closer, invading her personal space until she was forced to lean back against the outdoor bar. “At dinner, I discussed the net total. I never said thirty thousand flat. You knew that exact number because that’s the exact amount of the cashier’s check Warren tried to launder through a shell company last month.”
Warren let out a choked, indignant squawk. “That’s a complete fabrication! I’m a respectable citizen! You can't just throw slander around—!”
“Shut up, Warren,” Investigator Chen interrupted crisply. She snapped open her leather briefcase with a sharp sound that echoed across the patio and pulled out a thick stack of certified banking records and wire-transfer logs.
“My name is Sarah Chen, Senior Investigator for the Orange County District Attorney’s Office,” she announced, holding up her badge for all the guests to see. “We have been tracking an interstate financial extortion and fraud ring operating under the alias Pike Holdings LLC. For months, this operation has targeted vulnerable families by staging elaborate property thefts and false accusations to force third-party settlements.”
Darlene’s face went chalk white. She reached out, clawing at Grant’s sleeve. “Grant! Don't listen to them! They’re making it up! They’re trying to protect your criminal wife!”
“Mom, stop,” Grant said, his voice completely devoid of emotion as he shook her hand off his arm. “Just stop talking.”
Reid reached into his flannel pocket and pulled out a small digital audio recorder. Without a word, he pressed play and pointed it toward the patio sound system connected to our outdoor speakers.
Instantly, Warren Pike’s oily voice filled the backyard:
“We just need to make it look like Laurel took the cash, Darlene,” the recording played clearly, crystal-clear and undeniable. “If we pin it on her, Grant will feel so guilty he’ll force her brother to hand over his land-sale cash to keep the family out of jail. It’s foolproof. She’s too quiet to fight back.”
The silence that followed was absolute.

Every eye turned toward Warren. The elderly relatives who had spent years lending him money out of pity now stared at him with burning contempt. Several neighbors who had brought expensive housewarming gifts quietly stepped back from the patio edge, disgusted.
Warren’s knees buckled slightly. He looked around for an escape route, but two local police officers—summoned discreetly by Reid ten minutes prior—had already moved behind him, cutting off his path to the driveway.
