Chapter 6 - Teresa's Vengeance

Back across town, in the penthouse suite of the Four Seasons hotel where Teresa had retreated after being locked out of our estate, the illusion of elegance had completely disintegrated.

Teresa paced across the Italian marble floor, her expensive silk blouse damp with sweat, clutching her gold-plated iPhone. Beside her on the glass coffee table lay half a dozen declined credit cards and an eviction notice from the hotel management, who had just been notified that her primary billing account had been frozen by judicial order.

"What do you mean, you can't unfreeze the accounts?!" Teresa shrieked into the phone at her financial manager. "That is my late husband’s money! I built that estate! Connor is nothing without me! Unfreeze those funds immediately, or I will have you fired by noon!"

"Mrs. Bradley," the bank manager’s tired, formal voice replied, devoid of the fawning deference she was accustomed to. "The freeze was ordered by the Superior Court under allegations of misappropriation and criminal embezzlement. Any attempt to bypass this order will result in immediate contempt citations. My hands are tied. Furthermore, Mr. Connor Bradley has revoked your signatory authority across all corporate subsidiaries."

"You insolent coward!" Teresa screamed, throwing the phone against the plush velvet sofa.

She turned to Harold Pendelton, who was standing nervously near the French doors, a folder of legal filings clutched against his chest.

"Well? Don't just stand there like a mute idiot, Harold!" Teresa hissed, her eyes wild with vindictive fury. "File an emergency countersuit! Claim Connor is suffering from a mental breakdown! Claim Maya is an unfit mother, a gold-digger who has poisoned his mind with drugs or emotional abuse! I want temporary custody of Frederick, do you hear me? I want that baby in my arms by tomorrow afternoon!"

Pendelton adjusted his glasses, looking thoroughly terrified. "Teresa, please calm down and listen to reason. I just spoke with the District Attorney's office. Connor didn't just file civil paperwork. He handed over internal home surveillance footage. They have you on audio refusing to call 911. They have you physically blocking Maya in the pantry. If we walk into that courtroom tomorrow demanding custody, the judge will have you handcuffed to the counsel table on the spot!"

"I don't care!" Teresa shrieked, her voice reaching a shrill, hysterical pitch that shattered any trace of high-society composure. "That little peasant girl will NOT defeat me! I spent thirty years establishing this family at the top of the social hierarchy! I will burn that entire house to the ground before I let Maya enjoy a single penny of my husband’s legacy!"

She snatched up her phone from the couch, dialing the direct line of Evelyn Thorne, the senior editor of the city’s most influential society tabloid.

"Evelyn, darling," Teresa purred, forcing a trembling, falsely tearful cadence into her voice. "It’s Teresa Bradley. I have an exclusive story for your morning edition. A tragic story... about how an innocent, elderly mother was assaulted, robbed, and cast out of her own family home by a predatory daughter-in-law."

Pendelton stared at her in utter disbelief. "Teresa, what are you doing? You’re pouring gasoline on a forest fire!"

"Shut up, Harold," Teresa snarled away from the receiver. "If I cannot control them, I will destroy them in the court of public opinion."
