Chapter 5 - The Cracks in the Facade

By mid-afternoon, the first tremors of the earthquake I triggered began rippling through our extended family. My phone had been buzzing non-stop with incoming calls, voicemails, and frantic text messages from aunts, cousins, and wealthy family friends who had attended Frederick's ill-fated first birthday party.

I stepped outside into the quiet hospital terrace to take a call from my Aunt Beatrice—Teresa's younger sister, who had spent the previous evening sipping vintage champagne in my garden while Maya was trapped in the kitchen.

"Connor! Thank God you picked up," Beatrice's shrill voice came through the receiver. "What on earth is happening? Teresa just called me hysterical from a hair salon in Beverly Hills! She said her credit cards were declined and that you sent armed thugs to throw her out of your house! She says you've lost your mind and that Maya has manipulated you into turning against your own flesh and blood!"

"Beatrice," I said, my voice deadpan and icy. "Did you have a good time at the party yesterday?"

"What? Well, yes, it was a lovely affair, but—"

"Did you enjoy the five-course artisanal catering? Did you enjoy the imported floral arrangements and the live harpist?"

"Connor, what does that have to do with anything? Your mother is beside herself! She says—"

"Did you notice who cooked that food, Beatrice?" I interrupted, my tone cutting through her frantic rambling like a blade. "Did you notice who set up forty chairs in ninety-degree heat while carrying a baby burning with a fever of one hundred and four? Did you bother looking for my wife?"

Silence fell over the line. Beatrice stammered, "Well... Teresa said Maya was shy. She said Maya preferred helping behind the scenes because she didn't feel comfortable around high-society people..."

"Maya was held hostage in her own home," I snarled into the phone. "My son Frederick had a severe double ear infection that turned into an acute systemic infection. While you were clinking glasses, my mother threw Maya's phone into water and threatened to tear our family apart if Maya dared seek medical help and ruin her photo-op. Frederick was within hours of sepsis and permanent hearing damage."

A sharp, audible gasp escaped Beatrice's lips. "Connor... no. Teresa told everyone the baby was just taking a long nap upstairs..."

"I have forty-eight hours of high-definition security footage with directional microphone audio, Beatrice. Every word Teresa spoke, every threat she hurled at Maya, every cruel sneer—it's all recorded. And right now, the District Attorney has a copy. The detectives have a copy. And in about two hours, every board member of the Children's Hope Gala will receive a copy."

"Connor, please... think of the family's reputation!" Beatrice pleaded, her tone flipping instantly from outrage to sheer panic. "If this gets out, our family will be completely ruined! People will talk! The press—"

"The family died the moment my mother chose her vanity over my son's life," I said coldly. "If you side with her, Beatrice, you will be named as an accessory to willful endangerment. Don't call this number again."

I hung up without waiting for her reply.

Looking at my phone screen, I saw three missed calls from the president of the Grandview Country Club and a dozen frantic texts from cousins who had suddenly realized that the gravy train of the Bradley Family Trust was permanently derailed. They had all stayed silent while Teresa bullied Maya for two years, treating my wife like an uninvited servant at her own table.

They had chosen their side long ago. Now, they were going to choke on the consequences.
