Chapter 12 - The Looming Horizon

"What are you talking about?" I pressed, leaning against the glass, my knuckles turning white against the receiver.

"Did you really believe your father built Bradley Enterprises all by himself out of pure, honest sweat?" Teresa whispered, her eyes drilling into mine with venomous delight. "Arthur took shortcuts, Connor. Thirty years ago, he entered into a quiet, binding partnership with the Sterling Syndicate to secure government maritime contracts. A partnership that was supposed to pass to his heir upon his death."

My blood ran cold. The Sterling family was one of the most ruthless, reclusive financial dynasties on the East Coast—known for hostile corporate takeovers, untraceable political corruption, and ruthless elimination of rivals.

"Arthur hid the secondary partnership agreements in our private vault before he died," Teresa continued, savoring every syllable of my growing dread. "He knew that if the public ever saw those original charter contracts, Bradley Enterprises would be dismantled by the federal government overnight, and the Bradley name would be wiped from history."

She smiled, tapping her polished fingernails against the glass.

"I offered the Sterlings a trade, Connor. My silence and Arthur's original contracts in exchange for my total exoneration, unlimited financial backing, and the full destruction of you and your little family. Julian Sterling himself signed the wire transfer for my bail thirty minutes ago."

The heavy metal door behind Teresa clicked open. A corrections officer stepped inside, carrying her designer jacket and handbag.

"Time to go, Mrs. Bradley," the guard announced respectfully.

Teresa stood up, smoothing the wrinkles from her silk blouse. She held the telephone receiver close to her lips one last time, her eyes burning with pure, unadulterated venom.

"Enjoy your little victory celebration at home, Connor," she whispered chillingly. "Kiss your peasant wife and hold your sick little boy tight tonight. Because tomorrow morning, the Sterlings will execute their claim on every asset your father ever touched. And this time, walking through the back door won't save you."

She slammed the receiver down onto the cradle, turned on her designer heels, and walked out of the room with her head held high.

I stood frozen in the cold visitation booth, the dial tone buzzing relentlessly in my ear.

My phone vibrated in my pocket. I pulled it out with shaking hands and looked down at the notification. It was a high-priority alert from Vance Holloway, sent just seconds ago:

*Connor, we have an emergency. An international holding firm named Sterling Global just filed a hostile takeover bid and an immediate federal lien against all Bradley Enterprise operating accounts. They claim to hold a fifty-one percent debt lien executed thirty years ago. Connor... they’re seizing the estate.*

Outside the reinforced glass window of the courthouse basement, thunder rolled across the darkening evening sky, signaling that the battle had not ended.

It had only just begun.
