Chapter 8 - Shadows in the Penthouse

The Grand Hyatt ballroom glittered with crystal chandeliers, hosting the elite titans of global finance and industry. Every whisper in the room ceased the moment I entered through the grand double doors.

I wore an emerald silk gown that hugged my silhouette, leaving my shoulders bare while masking the bandages along my upper spine beneath an intricately draped cape of French lace. On my left stood my father, his presence commanding instant deference.

Across the room, standing beside a group of European ambassadors, was Julian Thorne.

He was undeniably striking—tall, broad-shouldered, with sharp aristocratic cheekbones and piercing, slate-gray eyes that missed nothing. Unlike the flamboyant, insecure Daniel who wore ostentatious gold watches to prove his worth, Julian dressed in understated bespoke charcoal, radiating an aura of dangerous, effortless power.

As our eyes locked across the crowded ballroom, he raised his champagne flute in a slow, deliberate salute. Then, excusing himself from the ambassadors, he walked directly toward us.

"Mr. Vance," Julian said smoothly, extending a hand to my father. "It is an honor to see you in good health."

"Save the pleasantries, Julian," my father replied coldly, ignoring the hand. "You know why we are here."

Julian lowered his hand without an ounce of embarrassment. His gaze shifted to me, his slate-gray eyes softening with an unreadable intensity. "Elena. You look breathtaking. Though I suspect you didn't come tonight to receive compliments."

"I came to find out if you ordered the whip, Julian," I said, my voice low and lethal, stepping close enough that only he could hear. "Or if you simply supplied the cash to Daniel's mistress."

Julian’s jaw tightened. For a fraction of a second, genuine shock flashed across his features, instantly replaced by dark fury.

"Step outside to the terrace with me, Elena," he said, his voice dropping into a razor-sharp whisper. "Bring your bodyguards if you wish. But if you think I had anything to do with that animal touching a single hair on your head, you have been catastrophically misled."

My father nodded toward Arthur, signaling our security detail to maintain sightlines as Julian and I stepped out onto the marble terrace overlooking the illuminated skyline of Manhattan. The crisp autumn air bit against my skin, sending a shiver through my laced shoulders.

Before I could speak, Julian unbuttoned his coat and gently draped it over my shoulders. I moved to pull away, but his grip was firm yet surprisingly gentle.

"Keep it on," he murmured. "Your wounds cannot catch a chill."

I froze. "How do you know about my wounds?"

"Because I was the one who sent the anonymous tip to the police captain fifteen minutes before your father arrived at the penthouse," Julian revealed, stepping closer until he stood between me and the wind. "Elena, my uncle was a traitor who attempted to overthrow my seat on the board. He funded Vanessa Caldwell to destroy you and leverage Vance Global. When I discovered the plot two nights ago, I mobilized my private security—but Daniel struck earlier than anticipated."

He looked directly into my eyes, and beneath the ruthless exterior of the billionaire CEO, I saw raw, unbridled fury.

"I didn't order the whip, Elena," Julian whispered, his hands trembling slightly with rage. "I have spent the last seven years watching you waste your light on a worthless coward, waiting for the day you would wake up. And now that you have... I will help you tear down everyone who ever dared to make you bleed."
