Chapter 7 - The Secret Ledger

Three days after the arraignment, I sat in the private study of my father's estate in Westchester. The healing process had begun; the doctor had changed my dressings, noting that my youth and vitality were fighting back against the physical scars. But the scars on my soul required an entirely different kind of medicine.

Arthur knocked softly and entered, holding a black leather-bound ledger and an encrypted flash drive.

"What did our forensic auditors find?" I asked, setting down my pen.

"It is far worse than simple domestic greed, Miss Elena," Arthur said gravely. He plugged the flash drive into the secure terminal on my desk. "When Vanessa Caldwell entered Daniel’s life fourteen months ago, it was not an accident. We traced her financial trail back through five dummy corporations registered in Panama and Cyprus."

I narrowed my eyes. "Daniel was an arrogant idiot, but he didn't have the brains to set up offshore layering."

"Precisely," Arthur confirmed, bringing up a complex web of transactions. "Daniel was merely an unwitting pawn. Vanessa was being paid a monthly retainer of two hundred and fifty thousand dollars to infiltrate your household, feed Daniel’s ego, and encourage him to isolate you. The ultimate goal was to force you to sign a post-nuptial power of attorney transferring Vance Global shares that were scheduled to vest on your thirtieth birthday."

A chill settled in the room. "Someone knew who I was all along."

"Yes," Arthur whispered. "Vanessa didn't know your true father, but her handlers did. They orchestrated Daniel's financial desperation, fed his resentment toward you, and deliberately drove him to physical violence to break your psychological will."

My father entered the study at that moment, having overheard the revelation. His face was a mask of cold fury, veins pulsing along his temple.

"Who paid her, Arthur?" my father’s voice rumbled like approaching thunder.

Arthur hesitated, glancing between us. "The wire transfers originated from the Thorne Corporation."

I gasped. "The Thornes? Julian Thorne?"

Julian Thorne was a childhood acquaintance, the brilliant, reclusive CEO of Thorne Industries—our family’s fiercest competitor in clean energy and telecommunications. He had attended our private social functions years ago, always polite, observant, and mysteriously distant.

"We have not confirmed Julian Thorne’s direct involvement," Arthur added quickly. "The account belonged to his late uncle’s branch of the family, which was expelled from the board last year. But the connection is undeniable. Miss Elena, the whipping was not merely Daniel's cruel madness. It was a calculated attempt to break the Vance bloodline."

I stood up slowly, looking at the glowing names on the monitor. The rage that ignited in my chest burned away the last remnants of my past sorrow. Daniel was already rotting in a cage, but the true puppet master had remained in the shadows.

"Arthur," I commanded, my voice cold as absolute zero. "Prepare my schedule. I am attending the Manhattan Energy Summit tomorrow night. It's time to meet Julian Thorne face to face."
