Chapter 4 - The Commissary Broadcast

Inside the crowded commissary of the county detention center, thirty inmates sat around stainless steel tables eating lukewarm oatmeal. Daniel Sterling sat huddled at the corner, his designer shirt torn, his bare feet blue with cold on the concrete floor. His teeth chattered uncontrollably.
"Hey, turn that up! It's the Vance press conference!" an inmate barked toward the guard booth.
The overhead television flickered as the volume echoed off the iron bars. Daniel slowly lifted his swollen, bruised face.
On the high-definition screen, an ethereal woman in a blinding white suit stepped to the microphone. Her posture was aristocratic, her diamonds blazing under the studio lights.
Daniel stopped breathing.
"Elena...?" he croaked, scrambling to his feet. He stumbled forward, gripping the iron barrier dividing the holding cell. "No... no, that's impossible! That's my wife! That's Elena!"
"Shut up, scumbag," a massive inmate growled, shoving Daniel against the wall. "Listen to the lady."
As Elena’s voice filled the room, announcing her real identity as the sole heiress of the Vance dynasty, Daniel’s knees buckled. When the screens displayed the medical evidence and the forensic photos of the whip marks, the commissary fell into dead silence.
"You whipped a Vance heiress twenty times?" another inmate whispered, turning slowly toward Daniel with disgust and predatory amusement. "Man, you’re not just going to prison. You’re already a dead man."
At that exact moment, two thousand miles away in an upscale safe house outside Philadelphia, Vanessa Caldwell was frantically shoving bundles of cash and jewelry into a duffel bag. Her hands shook violently. She had thought cooperating with the police would give her immunity, but her lawyer had just blocked her number after texting a single sentence: *The Vance family has taken over the prosecution.*
Suddenly, the front door splintered inward with an ear-splitting crash.
"FBI! Don't move!"
Tactical officers in full combat gear flooded the entryway, laser sights painting Vanessa’s chest. Behind them walked Arthur, my father’s personal attorney, carrying a sleek leather dossier.
"Vanessa Caldwell," Arthur said with polite, lethal calm. "Federal warrants have been issued for wire fraud, interstate extortion, and accessory to attempted homicide. You also owe thirty-two million dollars in misappropriated funds belonging to Vance Global subsidiaries."

Vanessa dropped the duffel bag, her knees hitting the floor, weeping hysterically. "It was Daniel! He made me do it! He beat her, not me! Please, I have money, I can pay—"
"You have nothing," Arthur interrupted smoothly, signaling the agents to cuff her. "As of three minutes ago, your accounts are frozen, your passport is revoked, and your mother’s luxury condo has been seized. Welcome to reality, Miss Caldwell."
