Chapter 8 - Uncovering the Embezzlement

While Nolan and Chloe were being torn apart by the public and the press, I sat in the penthouse suite of Vale Global’s headquarters, sipping warm decaffeinated chamomile tea. My obstetrician, Dr. Eleanor Wright, packed away her portable ultrasound monitor with a warm, reassuring smile.

“The baby’s heart rate is a perfect one hundred and forty beats per minute, Clara,” Dr. Wright said, patting my hand. “The bruising on your hip from the fall is superficial. You and the little one survived an incredible ordeal, but you are out of danger now.”

“Thank you, Eleanor,” I whispered, looking at the black-and-white sonogram printout resting on the marble table. My child’s tiny profile was clearly visible, peaceful and protected inside me. For three years, I had endured Nolan’s subtle cruelties, his late nights, and his endless gaslighting because I foolishly believed that a child needed two parents, no matter the cost. But last night’s fall had shattered the last lingering illusion. The man who could laugh at his own child’s endangerment did not deserve to exist in our world.

The door to the private study opened, and my father walked in, accompanied by Julian Sterling, the chief forensic auditor for Vale Global.

Julian bowed his head respectfully. “Good afternoon, Vice Chairman Vale. We’ve completed our initial forensic scrub of Vance Dynamics’ financial accounts over the past thirty-six months.”

“Show her, Julian,” Henry said, pulling up a chair beside me and pouring himself a cup of black coffee.

Julian placed a thick binder in front of me, open to a series of offshore shell corporation transactions registered in the Cayman Islands.

“Mr. Vance was not merely a poor manager, Clara,” Julian explained, tapping a manicured pen against a column of red figures. “He has been actively siphoning funds from the bridge loans guaranteed by your family trust. Over eighteen million dollars was funneled into dummy marketing entities over the last two years. And the sole signatory on those offshore shell accounts… is Chloe Adams.”

I looked up, my eyebrows raising slightly. “Chloe? She acted like a spoiled child who only knew how to swipe credit cards.”

“She was smarter than she let on, or rather, greedier,” Julian continued with a cold grin. “She convinced Nolan that the money would be safely sheltered from any divorce proceedings with you. They intended to declare corporate insolvency by the end of this quarter, leave the fifty-million-dollar debt with your trust, and flee to a non-extradition jurisdiction in South America with the stolen eighteen million.”

My father’s jaw hardened, his knuckles turning white against his coffee cup. “They didn't just want to discard my daughter. They planned to rob her blind, leave her holding the debt of a ruined company, and run away to live like royalty on stolen money.”

“Well,” I said softly, tracing the edge of the financial report, “it seems our dear Chloe forgot one very important detail.”

“What is that, darling?” Henry asked.

“The Cayman bank they used—St. Jude International Trust,” I smiled, looking up at my father. “Didn’t you acquire an eighty-percent majority stake in their parent holding company three years ago, Daddy?”

Henry chuckled, a deep, rumbling sound of absolute triumph. “I certainly did. Julian, freeze those accounts under international anti-money laundering protocols immediately. Let’s see how far they run without a single penny.”
