Chapter 4 - Begging on Broken Glass

The security guards seized Nolan by his elbows, lifting him off his feet with effortless strength. Nolan thrashed, his polished leather shoes scraping against the floor as he clawed at the air toward me.

“Clara! Don’t do this! Think about our history! Think about everything we promised each other!” he screamed, his voice echoing off the glass walls of the executive wing. “I built that company with my bare hands! You can’t take it from me! Henry, please! Have mercy!”

My father stood up, towering over the groveling man. Henry Vale had not conquered three separate industries by showing mercy to cowards who harmed the innocent. “Mercy?” Henry’s tone was terrifyingly quiet. “Mercy is the ambulance that brought my daughter to the hospital instead of the morgue. Mercy is the fact that you are leaving this building on your own two feet instead of in an evidence bag. Count your blessings, Vance. Because starting tomorrow, you won't even have a roof over your head.”

The double oak doors slammed shut, cutting off Nolan’s pathetic wails. The boardroom returned to total calm. My father turned to me, the ferocious titan melting away instantly, replaced by the warm, protective gaze of a father who would tear down the world for his daughter.

“Are you alright, darling?” he asked gently, resting a hand on my shoulder. “Did the stress cause any cramping?”

“I’m fine, Daddy,” I said softly, feeling a weight that had crushed my chest for three long years finally lift into the sky. “The baby is strong. We’re both strong.”

Down in the plaza beneath the Vale Global headquarters, Nolan was thrown out through the revolving glass doors. He landed hard on the polished granite steps, right in front of a dozen junior analysts holding their morning coffees. Passersby gasped and pulled out their phones as Nolan scrambled to his feet, his thousand-dollar suit covered in dirt, his tie askew, and his hair wild with panic.

His smartphone buzzed furiously in his pocket. It didn't stop vibrating. When he dragged it out, his screen was flooded with notifications.

*ALERT: First National Bank has frozen corporate line 4099.*

*ALERT: Vance Dynamics shares halted in pre-market trading.*

*ALERT: Chief Financial Officer Marcus Reed has submitted immediate resignation.*

Nolan’s phone began to ring. The caller ID flashed: *Chloe Adams*.

He answered on speaker with trembling hands, shouting into the microphone before she could speak. “Chloe! Pack everything! We have to call our lawyers right now! Do you hear me? Call every attorney in the city!”

On the other end, Chloe’s voice wasn’t frantic; it was sharp, spoiled, and brimming with petty arrogance. “Nolan? What are you shouting about, babe? I’m at the penthouse. Where have you been all morning? You promised we’d go test-drive the new Porsche Cayenne today! And by the way, that pathetic maid of a wife of yours left half her junk in the master closet. I threw all her old dresses out onto the balcony. I don’t want her cheap rags stinking up my new walk-in wardrobe.”

Nolan stood frozen on the street corner, people staring at his disheveled appearance. A cold sweat broke out across his forehead. “Chloe… shut up. Just shut your mouth.”

“Excuse me?” Chloe snapped back, her voice dripping with offended indignation. “Who do you think you’re talking to? I got rid of that useless pregnant sow for you last night! You should be on your knees thanking me! Now bring your black card home, we’re going shopping!”

“You idiot!” Nolan roared into the receiver, loud enough that a pair of tourists crossed the street to avoid him. “The woman you threw into the street wasn’t a maid! Her father is Henry Vale! Henry Vale owns the bank, he owns our contracts, and he owns the very penthouse you’re standing in!”
