Chapter 6 - The Eviction Notice

Chloe’s heart skipped a beat, but her stubborn arrogance refused to let reality sink in. “Fifteen minutes? Are you insane? Do you know who my father is? My father runs the biggest car dealership network in the tri-state area! I will sue every single one of you!”
“Ten minutes remaining, Miss Adams,” the Deputy replied calmly, stepping across the threshold. The moving crew moved in behind him, unfolding large plastic sheets and deploying digital inventory scanners.
“Get your dirty hands off my things!” Chloe shrieked as a mover picked up a designer handbag sitting on the console table.
“This bag was purchased on a Vance Dynamics corporate card on the sixteenth of last month,” the attorney noted, checking an itemized expense ledger on his tablet. “All corporate assets are subject to immediate federal seizure under the emergency receivership order. You may only take items that you can unequivocally prove were purchased with your personal, unencumbered funds.”
“Everything in here is mine!” she yelled, her voice reaching a piercing pitch. She lunged forward to grab the bag, but a female deputy stepped in front of her, placing a firm, gloved hand on Chloe’s shoulder.
“Do not resist, ma'am. If you touch any item under seizure, you will be placed in custody for obstruction of justice and felony asset tampering.”
Chloe looked around the vast, luxurious penthouse. Only twelve hours earlier, she had stood in this very hallway, laughing victoriously as she shoved a heavily pregnant Clara out into the driving rain, listening to Clara’s agonizing cries as she tumbled down the front stairs. Chloe had felt like a queen who had finally banished the useless peasant.
Now, strangers in uniform were cataloging every chair, every painting, every silver fork.
“Where is Nolan?” Chloe cried, tears of pure fury finally leaking through her mascara. “Call Nolan! He’ll fix this! He has connections!”
As if summoned by her panic, the private elevator doors opened again. Nolan Vance stumbled out, panting, his tie completely undone, his jacket missing two buttons. He looked twenty years older than he had that morning.
“Nolan!” Chloe rushed toward him, grabbing his arm like a lifeline. “Tell these people to leave! They’re stealing our furniture! They claim Clara owns the penthouse! Tell them who you are!”
Nolan looked at Chloe, his eyes hollow, dark circles bruised beneath his sockets. There was no warmth left in his face—only the raw, venomous rage of a ruined coward looking for someone to blame.
He ripped his arm away from her grip so violently that Chloe stumbled back against the foyer mirror.
“Get away from me, you stupid, greedy bitch!” Nolan snarled, his spit landing on her cheek.

Chloe froze, her jaw dropping in utter shock. “Nolan…? What did you just call me?”
“You destroyed me!” Nolan screamed, his voice cracking with madness as the deputies watched with detached amusement. “If you hadn't pushed Clara into the street, I would have signed the renewal contract today! I would have secured the fifty million! I would have had everything! But you couldn't keep your hands to yourself! You had to play the high-class mistress! You threw a billionaire’s only daughter into the gutter like a dog!”
