Chapter 9 - The Vance Empire Rises

The plaza cleared out rapidly as the press scrambled to publish the biggest scandal of the decade. Tabloid headlines were already hitting social media feeds across the globe:
*‘STERILE TECH CEO PUBLICLY HUMILIATED: MISTRESS’S BABY BELONGS TO CFO!’*
*‘CLAIRE MERCER REVEALED AS BILLIONAIRE HEIRESS OF THE VANCE EMPIRE.’*
Inside the towering glass lobby of Hayes Technologies—now officially re-branded as Vance-Mercer Holdings—Alexander Vance handed Claire a crisp, leather-bound portfolio.
“The board has just met in an emergency session,” Alexander said, a rare, proud smirk curving his lips. “Marcus Kane was arrested at JFK International trying to board a flight to Zurich. All assets have been recovered. Ethan’s voting rights have been completely stripped pursuant to the morality and embezzlement clauses of the initial charter.”
Claire looked up at the towering glass atrium she had funded five years ago. For five years, she had allowed herself to be diminished. She had cooked three-course meals every evening, endured Margaret’s barbed insults about her cooking, her clothes, and her supposed infertility, all because she had foolishly believed love was proven through sacrifice.
She had sacrificed her pride, her identity, and her power.
Never again.
“Where is Ethan now?” Claire asked quietly.
“Sitting in the security lobby downstairs,” Arthur reported, stepping out of the elevator. “He refuses to leave. He’s begging for five minutes alone with you, Mrs. Vance.”
Alexander’s expression darkened. “I can have my men throw him into the river, Claire. You don't have to look at that worm ever again.”
Claire closed the portfolio with a soft, decisive snap.

“No, Alexander,” she said, her eyes flashing with diamond-hard resolve. “I spent five years looking down while he looked down on me. I want to look him in the eye when I take everything he has left.”
She turned on her designer heels and walked toward the private elevator. The doors slid open silently, descending into the ground floor where Ethan was curled on a leather bench, his life’s work crumbling into dust around him.
