Chapter 10 - Crushed Beneath the Gavel

When the elevator doors parted, Ethan scrambled to his feet like a drowning man catching sight of a lifeboat.
His suit was ruined, his tie hung loosely around his collar, and his eyes were bloodshot from tears of humiliation.
“Claire!” he gasped, lunging forward, only to be stopped dead in his tracks by two burly Vance security operatives who placed heavy hands against his chest. “Claire, please! Listen to me!”
Claire walked slowly toward him, her heels clicking rhythmically against the Italian marble. She stopped five feet away, folding her arms.
“You have three minutes, Ethan,” she said flatly. “Make them count.”
Ethan fell to his knees. The proud, arrogant man who had stood in the dining room twelve hours earlier, laughing as his mother dumped scalding liquid on her head, was now weeping at her feet.
“I was blind, Claire! I was tricked!” he sobbed, clutching at the cuffs of his trousers. “Marcus and Brenda... they poisoned my mind! Brenda told me she loved me, she made me feel like a real man when we couldn't conceive! My mother pressured me every single day for an heir! I was weak, Claire, but I never stopped loving you! Everything I built, I built for us!”
Claire let out a short, incredulous laugh that cut through Ethan’s pathetic plea like a razor.
“You built nothing, Ethan,” Claire said coldly. “Every client you signed was referred by my private contacts. Every loan you secured was guaranteed by my family's sovereign assets. The very suit you are wearing was purchased on an American Express black card registered under my name.”
She reached into her purse and tossed a small velvet box onto the marble floor in front of him.
The box bounced, opening to reveal the simple platinum wedding band Ethan had given her five years ago—a band she had cherished while he bought Brenda diamond bracelets.
“You called me barren,” Claire whispered, leaning down slightly so only he could hear the lethal precision of her words. “You allowed your mother to pour boiling broth over my head while you stood by and laughed. You brought that woman into my house and told me I was useless.”
“I’m sorry! I will get on my knees on live television! I will beg for your forgiveness!” Ethan cried, reaching desperately for the hem of her trousers.
“You won't have the chance,” Claire said, stepping back out of his reach. “The district attorney has already compiled the indictments. Between Marcus Kane’s testimony and the forensic audit of your corporate accounts, you are looking at fifteen to twenty years for corporate embezzlement and tax evasion. The penthouse is gone. Your cars are being repossessed as we speak. And your mother will spend the remainder of her golden years in a state penitentiary.”

Ethan stared up at her, realizing with absolute, horrifying finality that there was no mercy left in the woman he had broken.
“Take him out,” Claire commanded the guards without looking back. “And burn that suit when he’s stripped of it.”
