Chapter 6 - A New Dawn and Absolute Freedom

Six months later, the spring air in Chicago was warm, bright, and filled with the sweet scent of blossoming trees along the lakefront.
The scandal had swept through the financial columns and high-society circles for weeks. Mercer Logistics had been restructured, its corrupt executives facing federal investigations for embezzlement, while Grant Mercer had been reduced to working a low-level sales job at a suburban hardware store just to pay down his mounting legal debts.
Marian and Paige had been forced to downsize into a modest, cramped apartment on the far north side, their high-society credit completely destroyed. Vanessa, realizing that Grant could no longer fund her lifestyle or provide a luxury recovery suite, had quietly moved back to her family home in Wisconsin.
Meanwhile, at Sterling & Hart Global Holdings, a new era had begun.
Evelyn Hart sat behind her grand mahogany desk on the thirty-second floor, looking out over the sparkling expanse of Lake Michigan. The sun poured through the floor-to-ceiling windows, warming the room and casting a golden glow over her paperwork.
The door opened softly, and Marcus Vance stepped in, holding a portfolio of newly approved community housing developments across the Midwest.
“All signatures are secured, Director Hart,” Marcus smiled respectfully. “The downtown revitalization project is officially underway.”
“Thank you, Marcus,” Evelyn said, closing her folder and leaning back in her executive chair.
She wore a soft ivory silk blouse, a delicate vintage gold necklace that had belonged to her grandmother, and an expression of profound, unshakable peace.
She had survived the fire. She had purged the falsehoods from her life. And she had built an empire of her own truth.

Evelyn walked to the window, took a deep breath of the fresh spring air, and smiled.
The storm had tried to lock her out of her own home. Instead, it had cleared away every unworthy anchor, leaving her standing at the very top of the world, entirely free and ready for whatever horizon came next.
