Chapter 4 - Unmasking the Parasite

The silence in the boardroom was so heavy you could hear the distant hum of the ventilation system.

Grant slowly lowered himself back into his leather chair, his face completely drained of color. He looked around the table, desperate for someone else to point out the insanity of what was happening. But the other executives sat like statues, eyes fixed respectfully on Evelyn.

“Before we review regional performance metrics,” Evelyn began, opening a black leather binder before her, “we need to address a critical matter of internal compliance, asset integrity, and fiscal fraud within our secondary logistics subsidiaries.”

She tapped a remote on the table.

Behind her, the massive wall-mounted LED screen flickered to life. Projected in giant, crystal-clear letters was a detailed financial audit of Mercer Logistics.

Grant jolted upright. Mercer Logistics? That was his division!

“For the past thirty-six months,” Evelyn continued, her voice steady and clinical, “Sterling & Hart Global Holdings has acted as the primary debt holder and silent equity backer for Mercer Logistics. We own the commercial real estate you operate out of. We hold the collateral on your vehicle fleet. And, as of this morning, we hold the forensic accounting reports that uncover your division's systemic embezzlement.”

Murmurs erupted around the table. Several executives shifted nervously.

Grant’s heart hammered against his ribs like a trapped bird. He stood up abruptly, his chair screeching against the hardwood floor.

“This is an outrage!” Grant stammered, his voice cracking with panic. “What is the meaning of this?! Who authorized this presentation?! And Evelyn—what the hell are you doing standing up there?! You’re an HR coordinator! You don’t know anything about logistics or corporate finance!”

The room went dead silent again.

Evelyn did not flinch. She looked at her husband with the detached pity one might reserve for a stray dog barking at a freight train.

“Mr. Mercer,” Evelyn said quietly, “you are currently speaking out of turn in a restricted executive session. Security.”

Before Grant could take another breath, the side doors opened, and two corporate security guards stepped silently into the room, positioning themselves directly behind his chair.

“You’ve spent four years treating me like a decorative ornament,” Evelyn continued, leaning forward, her gaze boring straight into his terrified eyes. “You mocked my education, dismissed my career, and brought your mistress into my home, expecting me to quietly surrender my bedroom to her.”

Grant stared at her, the horrific, crushing realization finally breaking through his wall of dense arrogance.

“You... you’re not an HR coordinator,” Grant whispered, the words tasting like ash in his mouth. “The Sterling & Hart conglomerate... you’re a Hart.”

“Charles Hart was my father,” Evelyn said softly. “And I am the sole majority owner of this holding company. Which means, Grant... I am your landlord, your ultimate employer, and the person holding the keys to your entire professional life.”
