Chapter 3 - The Boardroom of Reckoning

At 8:55 AM the next morning, the thirty-second-floor executive boardroom at Sterling & Hart Global Holdings was dead silent.

The room was vast, featuring a massive Macassar ebony conference table surrounded by twenty leather executive chairs. The panoramic windows overlooked Lake Michigan, gray and freezing beneath a winter sky.

Twelve senior regional executives sat stiffly in their seats. Among them was Grant Mercer.

Grant wore his best tailored navy suit, looking confident and polished. He had barely spoken to Evelyn since last night, though he had left three angry voicemails demanding she return before the cleaning lady arrived. He had arrived at this corporate summit expecting a routine strategic review of logistics supply chains across the Midwest.

He didn't know why he had been summoned to the holding company's downtown headquarters by executive fiat, but he assumed it was related to his recent pitch for a multi-million-dollar warehouse expansion.

The heavy mahogany double doors at the end of the boardroom swung open.

Marcus Vance stepped in first, holding a leather folio.

“Good morning, everyone,” Marcus announced crisply. “Please rise for the Regional Managing Director and Chief Audit Executive of Sterling & Hart.”

Grant stood up with the rest of the board, smoothing his tie. He glanced toward the doorway, expecting to see some intimidating corporate titan from New York or London—perhaps an older gentleman with gray hair and a stern face.

Instead, Evelyn Hart walked through the doors.

She wore a razor-sharp charcoal pantsuit, a white silk blouse, and subtle diamond studs at her ears. Her hair was pulled back into a flawless chignon. There was no trace of the quiet, patient wife who had stood in the Lincoln Park foyer holding an overnight bag twenty-four hours earlier.

She walked with absolute, unshakeable authority straight to the head of the long table, resting her hands on the polished ebony surface.

Grant’s jaw dropped so low he nearly choked. He blinked once, twice, rubbing his eyes as if he were hallucinating.

Evelyn?

What was his wife doing here? Did she get a job as an administrative assistant in the executive wing? Did she somehow sneak into a corporate briefing?

“Please be seated,” Evelyn said. Her voice carried across the massive room with a cool, razor-sharp resonance that commanded instant obedience.

Everyone sat down—except Grant. He remained half-standing, staring at his wife in utter disbelief.

Evelyn’s eyes swept slowly across the table until they landed squarely on Grant. A faint, icy smile touched the corner of her lips.

“Mr. Mercer,” Evelyn said smoothly. “Do sit down. You look as though you’ve seen a ghost.”
