Chapter 9 - Salt on the Earth

"Demolition?" Victoria screamed, her voice cracking into a shrill shriek. "You can't do that! That's our home! We have lived there for twenty years!"
"It was Claire’s parents' home," Nathan said, taking a step toward them. The raw aura of power radiating from him forced Harold and Victoria to stumble backward into the corridor. "A home you stole from her when she was twelve years old through fraudulent probate filings. You turned my wife into a servant in her own house. You tried to sell her to an abuser like cattle."
Nathan’s eyes narrowed into slits of ice.
"If you ever speak her name again," Nathan growled, "if you ever come within five hundred yards of Claire, of this building, or of any Whitmore holding, I will not simply ruin you financially. I will release the offshore tax fraud dossiers Marcus has compiled on your shell companies. You will spend the rest of your miserable lives in federal penitentiaries alongside Margaret."
Harold fell to his knees on the hallway carpet, grabbing at Nathan's polished shoes. "Nathaniel, please! Have mercy! We have nothing left! The debts... the loan sharks will kill me!"
"Then I suggest you run fast, Harold," Nathan said coldly.
He signaled the security guards. "Throw them out of the building. If they resist, have them arrested for trespassing."
The guards seized Harold and Victoria by their collars, dragging them kicking and screaming down the grand hallway toward the service exit, their shrill cries echoing into nothingness.
Nathan shut the heavy mahogany doors, sealing the apartment in serene, luxurious quiet.
He turned back to Claire.
For the first time all day, the cold, merciless facade melted from Nathan's face. The terrifying titan of the corporate world looked at the young woman before him with genuine tenderness, his shoulders lowering as he breathed a quiet sigh.
"Are you all right?" Nathan asked softly, reaching out to tuck a stray lock of dark hair behind Claire's ear.
Claire looked into his silver-gray eyes. Her heart raced, not with fear, but with a strange, intoxicating warmth that spread through her chest.
"I have spent ten years watching that family destroy everything my parents built," Claire whispered, her voice trembling slightly with emotion. "I thought I was cursed, Nathan. When Daniel sent you to the church, I thought it was the final humiliation."
She stepped closer to him, resting her hand gently against his chest. She could feel the steady, powerful rhythm of his heartbeat beneath the silk shirt.
"I didn't save you yesterday," Claire said, looking up into his eyes. "You saved me."
Nathan caught her hand, bringing it to his lips and pressing a warm, reverent kiss against the center of her palm.
"We saved each other, Claire," Nathan murmured, his deep voice sending shivers down her spine. "When I sat in that church, waiting for the altar, I was prepared to spend another five years in the shadows. I was going to let Daniel take the blame for the corporate collapse. But then you looked at me."
His gaze locked onto hers with breathtaking intensity.
"You looked at my hands. You looked into my eyes, and you saw a human being. Not an invalid. Not a broken pawn. You said 'I do' knowing what the world would think of you." Nathan’s fingers gently traced the contour of her jawline. "From that exact second, Claire, my life ceased to be about revenge. It became about giving you the world."
Claire felt her breath catch. The air between them grew heavy, charged with an undeniable, simmering heat that neither of them had anticipated when they stood before the priest twenty-four hours earlier.

Before either of them could speak, Marcus Vance’s voice crackled through the intercom console near the entry.
"Nathaniel. Forgive the intrusion, but we have a catastrophic development."
