Chapter 11 - The Vow in the Dark

The penthouse was silent as dusk fell over Boston, turning the sky into deep indigo streaked with violet.
In the master suite, Claire stood before the floor-to-ceiling mirror. She wore a backless midnight-black evening gown that hugged her curves with regal elegance, the dark fabric making the sapphire and black diamond necklace sparkle like a constellation across her chest.
She stared at her reflection, barely recognizing the timid, anxious girl who had been pushed down the church aisle yesterday morning.
A pair of strong arms slipped around her waist from behind.
Nathan pulled her gently against his chest, resting his chin against her shoulder as he looked at their shared reflection in the glass. He was clad in a custom-tailored black tuxedo, looking every bit the ruthless emperor he had been born to be.
"You look magnificent, Claire," Nathan murmured, his hands resting firmly against her waist.
Claire turned in his embrace, looking up into his silver-gray eyes. "Are you afraid, Nathan? Sterling tried to kill you once. If he knows you're whole... he won't stop at lawsuits."
Nathan looked down at her lips, his gaze darkening with an intensity that made Claire’s knees weak.
"For seven years, I was afraid," Nathan confessed softly. "I feared dying in the dark before my father could be avenged. I feared Daniel destroying everything our family bled for. But right now?"
He slid his hand up to the back of her neck, his fingers tangling in her hair, pulling her face gently upward until their lips were mere inches apart.
"Right now, Claire, I have something to protect that is far more precious than ships or gold."
Before Claire could answer, Nathan leaned down and captured her lips with his.
The kiss was neither hesitant nor gentle. It was possessive, fierce, and searing with a hunger that had been held back behind years of cold restraint. Claire gasped into his mouth, wrapping her arms around his neck, pulling him closer as the world outside the penthouse ceased to exist.
The heat between them flared into an all-consuming fire. Nathan lifted her effortlessly onto the marble vanity, his hands tracing the curve of her hips, his kiss deepening until Claire was breathless, her hands clutching at his shoulders.
For a long, intoxicating moment, the looming war with Sterling was forgotten, replaced by the raw, undeniable bond forming between two wounded souls who had found their salvation in one another.
When Nathan finally pulled back, his chest heaving, his eyes burned with an unshakeable fire. He pressed his forehead against hers, their breaths mingling in the quiet room.

"Whatever happens tonight," Nathan promised, his voice low and fierce, "you stay by my side. You are Claire Ashford Whitmore. The empress of this harbor. No one touches you."
Claire touched his cheek, her voice steady and resolute. "Until the end, Nathan."
