Chapter 4 - The Digital Forensics Trap

By Friday morning, the state courtroom of Cook County was packed to absolute capacity.

Local news vans lined the streets outside the courthouse. Reporters from every major Chicago network fought for a seat inside the gallery, eager to cover the dramatic downfall of two prominent socialites and the mysterious military mother who had returned from overseas to extract her child.

Sitting at the defense table were Tessa and Morgan, wearing standard orange county jail jumpsuits, their hair unwashed, their arrogant expressions completely shattered. Their high-priced defense attorney, a silver-haired corporate lawyer named Arthur Pendelton, was frantically shuffling papers, sweating under the harsh courtroom lights.

Sitting at the prosecution table alongside the District Attorney was me, wearing my full Class-A Master Sergeant uniform, my ribbons gleaming under the gallery lights, flanked by Colonel Vance.

Judge Eleanor Vance—a formidable seventy-year-old jurist known across Illinois for her absolute zero-tolerance policy toward violence against children—rapped her heavy wooden gavel against the bench.

"State versus Tessa Braddock and Morgan Braddock," Judge Vance announced, her sharp voice echoing clearly across the room. "Charges: Aggravated Battery of a Minor, Conspiracy, and Tampering with Federal Custody Evidence."

Arthur Pendelton stood up immediately. "Your Honor, we move for an immediate dismissal based on insufficient physical chain of custody regarding the alleged audio recording, and a complete lack of direct eyewitness corroboration outside of a traumatized minor's unverified statement."

The courtroom went quiet.

I stood up slowly from the prosecution table, walking to the center of the floor, holding a secure encrypted tactical data drive.

"Your Honor," I spoke, my voice ringing out clear, steady, and commanding. "The defense claims the audio recording is unverified. We request permission to enter Exhibit A into the permanent judicial record."

"Granted, Major Braddock," Judge Vance nodded.

I handed the data drive to the court bailiff, who plugged it into the courtroom’s primary media system.

Within three seconds, the horrific, crystal-clear audio of Tessa and Morgan beating my eight-year-old daughter with a metal bar because she refused to lie about me began to play through the courtroom’s high-powered surround-sound speakers.

“...Hold her other arm, Morgan. Make sure she faces the lens. One more strike across the shins...”

The sound of Elise’s terrified screams filled the silent courtroom.

Several people in the gallery gasped, covering their mouths in horror. Jurors sat frozen, their faces turning pale.

At the defense table, Tessa covered her ears, weeping hysterically, while Morgan stared blindly at the oak table, her body shaking from head to toe.

"Furthermore, Your Honor," Chief Warrant Officer Davis stepped forward, opening a second digital dossier on the projection screen, "our military cyber-intelligence unit mirrored the defendants' cloud storage accounts forty-eight hours ago. We recovered three deleted video drafts where the defendants rehearsed the script they intended to force the child to read on camera."

Davis tapped a button.

On the massive courtroom screen, a video played showing Tessa holding a heavy metal curtain rod over a terrified, crying Elise, forcing her to repeat lines accusing me of abandonment.

Judge Eleanor Vance lowered her reading glasses. Her eyes burned with a cold, terrifying wrath as she looked down at the defense table.

"Tessa Braddock. Morgan Braddock," Judge Vance declared, her voice echoing like a bell of absolute doom. "In all my years on the bench, I have never witnessed such calculated, monstrous, and cowardly cruelty directed at an innocent child."

The judge raised her fountain pen, signing the formal decrees without a single hesitation.

"I hereby deny all bail requests," Judge Vance stated cleanly. "Furthermore, I am binding both defendants over to the State Grand Jury on Charges of Attempted First-Degree Murder and Child Torture, with no possibility of bond."

The heavy wooden gavel struck the block.

Bailiffs stepped forward, snapping heavy steel waist chains onto Tessa and Morgan as they wept and screamed, dragging them out through the side doors of the courtroom toward the holding cells.
