Chapter 2 - The Pediatric Trauma Ward

The pediatric intensive care unit at St. Jude Memorial Hospital in downtown Chicago smelled of antiseptic, bleach, and sterile stainless steel.
When I pushed open the door to Room 412, the sight waiting for me made my chest seize so violently I thought my heart would stop.
Elise lay propped up against a mountain of white pillows. Her small, pale face was bruised across the left cheekbone, her lower lip split and swollen. Both of her arms were wrapped in thick orthopedic casts up to the elbows, and her right leg was suspended in a traction sling, the bones shattered by deliberate, calculated blunt-force trauma.
Sitting in a vinyl chair beside the bed was Ryan.
He looked up as the door clicked open. His eyes were red-rimmed, his suit wrinkled, his hands shaking as he stood up.
"Nia..." Ryan choked out, taking a step toward me. "Oh God, Nia... I didn't know... I swear to God I didn't know they were capable of this—"
CRACK.
My right fist struck the center of his jaw with the accumulated fury of every mile I had flown across the Pacific.
Ryan stumbled backward, crashing hard against the rolling medical supply cart before hitting the floor, clutching his bleeding mouth, staring up at me with sheer terror.
"You didn't know?" I whispered, my voice dropping into a lethal, quiet register that made the heart monitors beside the bed beep faster. "You gave them unsupervised access to our daughter! You created the custody pressure that made them think they could break her bones to manufacture leverage in our divorce court!"
"Nia! Please!" Ryan whimpered, pressing himself against the baseboard, blood leaking from his lip. "Tessa and Morgan told me they were just taking her shopping! They said she fell at the park! They lied to me too!"
"Mommy?"
A soft, trembling voice cut through our violent exchange.
I turned instantly, dropping to my knees beside the hospital bed, gently taking Elise’s tiny, uninjured right fingers into my palm.
"I'm here, bug," I whispered, tears finally breaking free, rolling down my cheeks as I pressed her knuckles against my lips. "I'm right here. Nobody is ever going to touch you again."
Elise looked at me, her big brown eyes swimming with a maturity no eight-year-old child should ever possess. "Did you bring the bad people away, Mom?"
"The bad people are about to learn what happens when you cross an intelligence operative," a calm, deep voice spoke from the doorway.
Colonel Vance stepped into the hospital room, dressed in his full Class-A Army dress uniform, flanked by Chief Warrant Officer Davis and two local Chicago police detectives holding federal jurisdiction badges.
Ryan scrambled backward onto his feet, staring at Vance in utter shock. "Who... who are you? What is this?"
Detective Miller—a senior detective with the Chicago Police Department’s Special Victims Unit—stepped forward, holding a pair of heavy steel handcuffs.
"Ryan Braddock," Detective Miller announced, his voice echoing cleanly through the room. "You are being detained for questioning regarding Child Endangerment, Custody Fraud, and Association with Felonious Assault."
"Detained?! Are you insane?!" Ryan shrieked, backing into the corner. "My sisters did it! Not me!"
"Your sisters used your ongoing custody petition as their primary motive, Mr. Braddock," Detective Miller stated flatly, snapping the handcuffs onto Ryan’s wrists. "And our cyber-forensics unit just intercepted three text messages sent from your phone to Tessa instructing her to 'get the video signed by the kid before Wednesday's court hearing.'"

Ryan went completely gray. He looked at me, his eyes wide with frantic, pathetic betrayal. "Nia... tell them... tell them we're a family..."
"You were never family, Ryan," I said, standing up slowly, towering over him as the detectives led him out of the room in chains. "You were just a temporary mistake."
