Chapter 33 - Return to Lilac Street as a victor

A month after the court ruling, autumn had painted the trees along the suburban avenue a brilliant golden hue.
Sarah's car rolled slowly, turning onto Lilac Street. This was the first time she had returned to this place since the last time she packed her belongings and left. But the feeling in her chest now was worlds apart from before. The path leading to the house had once been shrouded in suffocating silence. Now, the iron gate is wide open, and a large sign in front displays the name of the company that liquidates and auctions court assets.
According to the judgment ordering the seizure of property for damages, the large house on Lilac Street is subject to repossession. The property was now officially under the control of Sarah's estate management. She had no intention of keeping the place that held such toxic memories; she had signed the order to auction off the entire estate and donate any surplus to a fund supporting young women who have suffered domestic violence. Today, she only stopped by for fifteen minutes with court officials to retrieve her grandfather's antique pendulum clock and his collection of oil paintings.
Sarah walked across the porch, around to the lawn at the back—the site of the fateful barbecue.
The large charcoal grill used to emit thick smoke in the corner of the garden, now covered in a layer of gray dust. The long wooden tables and blue folding chairs, once laden with food and red plastic cups, had been completely cleared, leaving only the paved courtyard under the shade of the old, ancient tree.
Sarah walked over and stood right where she had stood, clutching her cheek in shock and humiliation. She looked down at the paving stones—where once lay scattered melting ice and puddles of pale yellow lemon juice.
The autumn wind blew through the trees high above, causing the yellow leaves to fall gently at her feet. There was no more Daniel's shouting, no more the scrutinizing, contemptuous stares of her relatives. And the fear that had been suffocating her chest was gone.
The place where her self-respect was once buried is now just a small, harmless, empty plot of land.
She realized that the monsters that had haunted her youth were only truly formidable when she was kneeling. When she stood tall and stepped into the light, their entire kingdom was nothing more than a handful of dust beneath her feet.

"Ms. Sarah, your grandfather's watch and paintings have been carefully packed into the transport vehicle," the court employee approached and politely announced.
"Thank you," Sarah smiled in relief. She turned her back to the lawn, walked straight to her car without glancing back at Lilac Street once more.
