Chapter 26 - The first dawn behind the door of peace

The morning sun didn't knock with a bang. It crept through the floor-to-ceiling windows, casting a golden carpet over the warm oak floors of Sarah's new home – a haven large enough for the peace she longed for.
Sarah opened her eyes. For the first few seconds between sleepiness and reality, her body instinctively tensed up. Her heart skipped a beat, and her ears unconsciously listened to the heavy footsteps in the hallway, the rough knocking on the door, or the harsh, abusive words that had plagued her throughout her years living on Lilac Street. But there was absolutely nothing. Only the chirping of sparrows on the maple branches outside the balcony, the rustling of the autumn wind through the leaves, and the gentle aroma of roasted coffee wafting from the automatic coffee machine that had been set to time since last night.
She slowly sat up, gently touching her cheek with her hand. The burning red mark was gone, the numb sensation of the slap she'd received during the barbecue on the lawn was gone. But the memory of that fateful summer afternoon remains as vivid as a slow-motion film: the weight of the lemonade pitcher and ice slipping from her fingers. The sound of shattering glass, plastic cups scattered across the tiled floor, and pale yellow water stains on her pants. She vividly remembered the angry gaze and clenched fists of the man standing before her, the cold stare and crossed arms of the woman beside him, the astonished hand covering the mouth of the old woman, and the unblinkingly raised phone of her cousin filming.
Pain used to be shackles, but now it's a compass guiding her out of the darkness.
Sarah stepped out of bed, her bare feet touching the cool floor. Her last day on Lilac Street was now forever behind her. The last cardboard boxes in the living room had been unloaded. In the corner, the large digital drawing table and studio lighting setup were fully installed, ready for her first independent branding project.
She stepped into the brightly lit kitchen and poured herself a glass of warm water with honey. The phone on the marble countertop was completely silent. No barrage of missed calls, no manipulative messages from the family's accomplices. After Sarah made her own definitive choice and unexpectedly refused a bribe offer at the lawyer's office, she changed her personal phone number, keeping only a single work line managed by lawyer Marcus's legal assistant.

However, the early morning tranquility was merely the calm before the final earthquake. As Sarah opened her tablet to check the design sketches, an urgent email from Marcus appeared on the screen with the title in capital letters: “Federal Audits Involved – Confidential Account Completely Frozen.”
Sarah set her teacup down on the table, her gaze calm but sharp. She knew the people of Lilac Street very well. When their hidden pockets are touched, the last of their moral masks will fall, and the cornered beasts will begin to bite back.
