Chapter 8 - The Verdict

June brought the culmination of the legal proceedings.
The courtroom was quiet, cool, and filled with the sterile scent of polished wood and old paper. Mark sat at the defense table in a sharp navy suit, looking significantly thinner, his arrogant posture replaced by a tense, desperate slump. His high-priced lawyer whispered urgently in his ear, but Mark didn't respond; his eyes kept darting toward the gallery, where I sat beside Claire.
When the judge entered, the entire courtroom rose.
The verdict, delivered after a concise two-day trial where the prosecution presented unassailable evidence, was unanimous and decisive.
Guilty on all counts of domestic assault, willful intimidation, and coercion.
As the bailiff read the verdict aloud, I watched Mark’s face pale dramatically. He turned around once, his eyes locking onto mine with a desperate, pleading expression—the exact same look he used to give me right before promising he would "never do it again."
I didn't blink. I didn't smile. I just looked at him with complete, absolute indifference.
The judge’s sentencing was swift and uncompromising: three years in state prison, followed by five years of supervised probation, a permanent restraining order prohibiting any contact with me, and mandatory anger management counseling.
As Mark was handcuffed and led out through the side doors of the courtroom, his expensive lawyer patted his shoulder awkwardly before packing up his leather briefcase and walking away.
