Chapter 4 - The House of Cards Collapses

Back at 414 Elmwood Drive, the holiday dinner had dissolved into an absolute disaster.

When Detective Vance and Officer Thomas finished taking preliminary statements, they didn't leave quietly. They informed Mark that a formal arrest warrant had been issued and instructed him to accompany them to the precinct for booking and questioning.

Carol had tried everything—her legendary social influence, her threatening hints about knowing local judges, her tearful performance of a distraught mother whose holiday had been ruined by a manipulative daughter-in-law.

None of it worked.

Detective Vance had looked Carol dead in the eye and said, "Mrs. Reynolds, enabling a violent criminal and victim-blaming in the presence of law enforcement is a very dangerous game. I suggest you step aside, unless you'd like to be investigated for obstruction of justice."

That shut Carol up instantly.

As Mark was led out of the house in handcuffs—his face pale, his expensive winter coat dragging slightly as officer hands gripped his arms—he shot one last venomous glare around the room. He had expected his family to save him. He had spent his entire life believing that his mother’s wealth, status, and ruthless protection could shield him from any consequence.

He was wrong.

The moment the patrol car’s red and blue lights flashed against the living room walls and faded down the street, absolute silence descended upon the house.

Carol stood in the center of her immaculate foyer, her chest heaving, her silver-sprayed hair slightly ruffled from the stress. She looked around at her remaining guests—Paul, who was silently packing his coat, and Denise, who was slumped on the living room sofa with her face in her hands.

"Well?" Carol snapped, trying to summon back her authoritative tone, though her voice trembled visibly. "Are you all just going to sit there like ghosts? Paul, go outside and check if any of the neighbors saw that spectacle! We cannot have the neighborhood gossiping about this!"

Paul didn't move. He slowly zipped up his heavy winter jacket, stood up, and looked his mother-in-law straight in the eye for the first time in fifteen years of marriage.

"No, Carol," Paul said quietly, his voice devoid of its usual subservient warmth. "I’m not checking on the neighbors. And we are leaving. Right now."

Carol stared at him, aghast. "What did you just say to me?"

"You heard me," Paul said, walking over to the coat rack and grabbing Denise’s scarf. He reached down, gently pulling Denise up from the sofa. "For years, you trained your son to believe he could treat people however he wanted without consequence, because you were always right there to clean up his mess, excuse his rage, and blame his victims. You created this monster, Carol. And tonight, I am not letting my wife spend another minute in a house that normalizes abuse."

"How dare you!" Carol shrieked, her face turning purple with rage. "After everything I’ve done for you? After the down payment I gave you for your house? You ungrateful—"

"Keep your money, Carol," Paul interrupted coldly, pulling Denise toward the front door. "We’re done taking payments that come with our souls attached."

May you like

The front door clicked shut behind them, leaving Carol standing entirely alone in her expensive, perfectly decorated, freezing-cold foyer.

The queen of the castle had lost her kingdom in less than an hour.
