Chapter 20 - The Threat from the Past

Six months before Dominic's scheduled release from prison, an unexpected development rocked the legal landscape of New York. Arthur Foster suffered a severe stroke in upstate New York, leaving him incapacitated and dependent on state-funded hospice care.

Desperate for survival and unable to pay her mounting debts, Victoria Foster made one final, reckless gamble.

She traveled to New York City and approached a predatory tabloid television producer, claiming she possessed private diary entries and recordings from my early twenties that would prove I had "psychologically manipulated" Dominic into marrying me under false pretenses.

"She pretended to be a poor schoolteacher to trap my brilliant son!" Victoria claimed in a leaked teaser trailer for the sensationalist program Exposed: Manhattan Elite. "She orchestrated our downfall from day one! She is an unstable heiress who uses her family's billions to ruin anyone who doesn't bow to her!"

The media network scheduled the broadcast for prime time on a Friday evening, banking on maximum viral ratings.

Julian and I were reviewing foundation logistics when Marcus entered my office, holding an encrypted tablet. "Miss Audrey, we just intercepted the raw footage that the network plans to air tomorrow night."

"Does she actually have any authentic recordings?" Julian asked, his brow furrowing with genuine concern for my peace of mind.

"She has nothing but fabricated hearsay and chopped voice memos from family dinners five years ago," Marcus replied. "However, the network’s parent company, Zenith Broadcasting, is running heavy promotional spots across social media."

I tapped my fingers rhythmically against the desk. "Who owns the controlling voting shares in Zenith Broadcasting, Marcus?"

"A private equity fund out of Boston," Marcus answered. "But their primary revolving line of credit—about eighty million dollars—is syndicated through Hayes Maritime's merchant banking division."

Julian turned to me, a fierce, protective glint in his eyes. "Say the word, Audrey. I can have their credit facility frozen before the market closes at four o'clock."

"No," I said, a calm smile spreading across my face. "Don't freeze their credit, Julian. That gives them the excuse to claim they were silenced by billionaire censorship. We play this by the book, but we raise the stakes."

I turned to Eleanor Vance. "Eleanor, prepare an immediate emergency injunction for defamation and intentional infliction of emotional distress in New York State Supreme Court. But attach an addendum: provide Zenith Broadcasting's legal department with the full financial audit of Victoria Foster's bank accounts from the past five years."

"You mean the accounts showing she embezzled thirty-five thousand dollars from her husband's veteran pension fund to buy designer handbags?" Eleanor asked, her eyes widening with professional satisfaction.

"Exactly," I replied. "And inform Zenith's chief executive officer that if they air that broadcast, we will not only sue the network for twenty million dollars in statutory damages, but we will also refer Victoria Foster to the New York State Attorney General for elder fraud against her incapacitated husband."

Within forty-five minutes of Eleanor serving the papers, Zenith Broadcasting issued an abrupt, total retraction. The broadcast was permanently canceled. The teaser clips were scrubbed from every platform, and Zenith's president personally called my office to apologize for the "unverified claims of an opportunistic third party."

Victoria Foster's final weapon had exploded in her hands before she could even pull the trigger.
