Chapter 12 - The Puppet Master Behind the Curtains

The Westchester County Family Courthouse looked imposing beneath the gray November sky, but inside the private executive conference room, the atmosphere was suffocating. I sat at the head of the oak table, flanked by Eleanor Vance and two forensic accountants from Vanguard Horizon. Across the room sat Dominic Foster, flanked by a loud, combative attorney named Richard Sterling, and his mother, Victoria, who wore an ostentatious faux-fur collar that screamed faded desperation.

Dominic looked noticeably scrubbed clean compared to the broken man who had sobbed on the marble floor of Brooks Tower eighteen months ago. He wore a crisp navy suit—clearly rented or paid for by an outside sponsor—and his hair was slicked back with arrogant precision. But his eyes still carried that restless, predatory hunger that had once fooled me.

"We are offering a settlement, Miss Brooks," Sterling declared, sliding an envelope across the table. "My client is prepared to withdraw the public petitions regarding parental alienation if you grant fifty-percent physical custody of Master Leo Brooks, along with an equitable monthly stipend of seventy-five thousand dollars to maintain a suitable home environment for the child."

Victoria leaned forward, her lips twisted in a triumphant sneer. "You thought you could throw us away like trash, Audrey. You thought you could hide behind your daddy’s money while Dominic suffered in silence! A child needs his father, not a cold, ruthless corporate machine."

I didn't blink. I didn't even touch the manila envelope. Instead, I leaned back, folding my hands over the mahogany surface, and looked directly into Dominic's eyes.

"Seventy-five thousand dollars a month, Dominic?" I asked, my voice calm and razor-sharp. "Is that what you think Leo's childhood is worth? Or is that the exact amount you owe to the private loan sharks who financed your mother’s eviction debts in Staten Island?"

Dominic’s face twitched. "This isn't about money, Audrey! You humiliated me in front of the entire city! You turned my son against me before he could even speak!"

"You left him on a freezing Manhattan sidewalk five days after he was cut out of my body," I said, every word hitting the room like a hammer striking an anvil. "You gave me fifty dollars for a public bus while you drank four-thousand-dollar wine with your mother. And now you sit here, pretending to be a father?"

"That was eighteen months ago!" Sterling barked. "My client was under severe corporate distress induced by Vanguard Horizon's predatory tactics! We have grounds to argue that your father intentionally manufactured Dominic’s business failures!"

"Let's talk about Vanguard Horizon, then," Eleanor Vance intervened, pulling a thick black binder from her briefcase and sliding it across the table with a resounding thud. "And let's talk about FleetRoute—the company that suddenly hired Mr. Foster three months ago."

Dominic's smug expression wavered.

"Through shell entity tracing, our compliance team discovered that FleetRoute is funded entirely by a foreign holding entity called Blackwood Capital," Eleanor explained, turning the pages with deliberate slowness. "And Blackwood Capital is currently being investigated by the Department of Justice for international customs fraud and illicit port laundering."

Dominic’s jaw slackened. "What? No... that's impossible. Blackwood is a legitimate logistics group!"

"You didn't do your due diligence, did you, Dominic?" I said softly, watching the panic begin to pool in his eyes. "You were so desperate to find someone who would give you a title and an expense account that you signed corporate officer documents for a criminal front. Under federal law, as FleetRoute's regional director of operations, your signature is on twenty-four falsified shipping manifests that docked in Newark last week."

Victoria gasped, grabbing Dominic's arm. "Dominic! What is she talking about? Tell her she's lying!"

Dominic tried to speak, but his voice came out as a strangled squeak. "I... I just signed the paperwork they sent me. Mr. Blackwood told me it was standard operational procedure!"

"Ignorance of fraud is not an affirmative defense in the Southern District of New York," Eleanor stated coolly. "Miss Brooks has not alienated you from your son, Dominic. Your own reckless stupidity has made you an active liability to his safety."

I stood up, smoothing the front of my jacket. "Withdraw this fraudulent custody filing by five o'clock today, Dominic. If you don't, these manifests will be delivered to the United States Attorney's Office before breakfast tomorrow. You will never see Leo again, not because I took him, but because you will be spending the next decade in federal prison."

I turned and walked out of the conference room, leaving Dominic staring at the open binder in utter, paralyzing terror.
