Chapter 5 - The Reckoning in CourtThe preliminary criminal hearing took place in downtown San Diego six weeks later.

The courtroom was packed with journalists, former business partners, and curious onlookers. Preston Vale sat at the defense table, wearing a standard orange jumpsuit, his hair unstyled, his eyes sunken and hollow. He looked every bit of the broke, broken man he had once mocked others for being.

When I walked into the courtroom wearing a sharp, tailored ivory suit, accompanied by my father and a team of state prosecutors, Preston looked up. For a second, our eyes met. He opened his mouth as if to beg, to whisper some familiar manipulation, but the words caught in his throat.

The judge’s gavel struck soundly.

“State of California versus Preston Vale. The charges include felony domestic violence, aggravated assault, child endangerment, grand larceny, and corporate wire fraud.”

Prosecutor Sarah Chen laid out the evidence with devastating precision. She presented audio recordings recovered from my hidden phone backups, medical records documenting years of abuse, and financial audits proving that Preston had systematically embezzled funds from charitable foundations to cover his illicit shipping operations.

Preston’s defense attorney didn't even attempt a rebuttal; there was nothing left to defend.

When the judge handed down the sentence—fifteen years to life without the possibility of parole for the combined federal and state convictions—Preston buried his face in his hands and wept. Not out of remorse, but because he finally understood what it meant to have nothing left.

As the bailiffs led him away in chains, he glanced back one last time. But I wasn't looking at him. I was looking out the courtroom window at the bright, unobstructed blue sky over San Diego.
