Chapter 3 - The Gathering Storm

Within twenty minutes, the La Jolla mansion was surrounded. Not by society friends or business associates, but by investigators, forensic photographers, and state troopers.

I was wrapped in a warm wool blanket by a female paramedic who gently cleaned the cut on my cheek. Upstairs, a compassionate child-advocate officer sat with Lily, reading her a story and helping her pack a small overnight bag, ensuring she felt safe and protected.

Preston sat handcuffed on the plush living room sofa, his expensive suit wrinkled, his arrogant demeanor utterly shattered. He watched in silent terror as federal and state investigators began boxing up his laptops, financial ledgers, and hard drives.

Because Thomas Hart wasn't just a police chief—he had spent the last two decades overseeing elite task forces tracking corporate corruption, white-collar extortion, and illegal shipping syndicates. And as it turned out, Preston’s empire was built on a foundation of smuggled contraband and falsified customs declarations.

Councilman Reid, alerted by emergency scanner traffic, arrived at the gates twenty minutes later in a panic, flashing his expensive watch at the checkpoint. “I demand to speak to the owner of this property! As a city councilman, I—oh.”

Reid stopped dead in his tracks when he saw Thomas Hart standing by the foyer console, reviewing arrest warrants.

“Evening, Councilman,” Thomas said without looking up. “If you’re here to advocate for Mr. Vale, I suggest you review his shipping manifests first. Unless, of course, you’d like your own campaign contributions audited tonight.”

Reid turned pale, muttered an apology, and fled back to his car faster than he had arrived.
